Agios Nikolaos (municipality)
The municipality of Agios Nikolaos ( "Saint Nicholas"; ) is a municipality located in the region of Crete, in Greece. The current municipality is the result of the merger in 2011 between the former municipalities of Agios Nikolaos, Neapoli and the community of Vrachasi, which became municipal units. Its seat is the town of Ágios Nikólaos, its "historical capital" the town of Neapoli. History Already in the 19th century there was an Eparchy Mirambello (), the dimensions of which corresponded exactly to the current municipality of Agios Nikolaos. It was named after the Venetian fort ''Mirambello,'' which existed in the port town of Agios Nikolaos in the Middle Ages. However, the place was already meaningless at that time, which is why ''Kenourio Chorio,'' today's Neapoli, was chosen as the capital. Lasithi
Lasithi () is the easternmost regional unit on the island of Crete, to the east of Heraklion. Its capital is Agios Nikolaos, the other major towns being Ierapetra and Sitia. The mountains include the Dikti in the west and the Thrypti in the east. The Sea of Crete lies to the north and the Libyan Sea to the south. To the east of the village of Elounda lies the island of Spinalonga, formerly a Venetian fortress and a leper colony. On the foot of Mount Dikti lies the Lasithi Plateau, famous for its windmills. Municipalities And Communities Of Greece
The municipalities of Greece ( , in singular case ) are the lowest level of government within the organizational structure of the state. Agios Nikolaos or Aghios Nikolaos ( ) is a coastal city on the Greece, Greek island of Crete, lying east of the island's capital Heraklion, north of the city of Ierapetra and west of the city of Sitia. Neapoli, Crete
Neapoli () is a small town and a former municipality in Lasithi, eastern Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform, it has been treated as a municipal unit of Agios Nikolaos. The municipal unit has an area of ., excluding municipal departments of Vrachasi and Milatos that left in 2006 It is located west from Agios Nikolaos in the green valley of Mirabello. The surrounding area is mountainous and home to a collection of native olive trees. Neapoli is a traditional Cretan town with narrow streets and cobbled roads. Vrachasi () is a village and a former municipality in the Lasithi regional unit, Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality of Agios Nikolaos, of which it is a municipal unit.
