Adlumia
''Adlumia'' is a genus of two species in the family Papaveraceae. The genus name derives from John Adlum (1759–1836), a surveyor, associate judge, plantsman and agriculturist who ran an experimental farm in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. The genus was first described and published in Syst. Nat. Vol.2 on page 111 in 1821. One species, '' Adlumia fungosa'', is commonly known as the ''Allegheny vine'', ''climbing fumitory'', or ''mountain fringe''. It is found in the eastern US, north of VA and TN, as far west as IA and MN, as well as in eastern Canada. Adlumia Fungosa
''Adlumia fungosa'' is a species in the Papaveraceae that is commonly known as the Allegheny vine, climbing fumitory, or mountain fringe. It is a herbaceous, creeping, flowering plant and is closely related to the Fumitory genus, '' Fumaria''. ''Adlumia fungosa'' is a biennial climbing plant with very slender stems. The leaves are several times pinnately divided, prehensile, and feathery in texture. The white or pinkish flowers grow in large clusters and appear in summer. The plant grows on wet and wooded slopes, and is native to North America, particularly the Allegheny Mountains area. It is a threatened or endangered species throughout its range in northeastern North America, where it has not been completely extirpated. John Adlum
John Adlum (April 29, 1759 – March 14, 1836) was a pioneering American viticulturalist who was the first to cultivate the Catawba grape. He is known as "the father of American viticulture" (grape-growing). He also served in the American Revolutionary War; was a well-known surveyor; was one of the first associate judges in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania; and served in the United States Army in the War of 1812. Early life and military career Adlum was born on April 29, 1759, in York, Pennsylvania, to Joseph and Catherine (Abbott) Adlum. His father was the sheriff and coroner for York County, and Adlum was raised in York. His paternal family was of Scots-Irish descent, while maternally he was of English descent. Fumarioideae
Fumarioideae is a subfamily of the family Papaveraceae (the poppy family). It was formerly treated as a separate family, the Fumariaceae (the fumitory, fumewort or bleeding-heart family). It consists of about 575 species of herbaceous plants in 20 genera, native to the Northern Hemisphere and South Africa. The largest genus is ''Corydalis'' (with 470 species).
