Greatest Hits
A greatest hits album or best-of album is a type of compilation album that collects popular and commercially successful songs by a particular artist or band. While greatest hits albums are typically supported by the artist, they can also be created by record companies without express approval from the original artist as a means to generate sales. They are typically regarded as a good starting point for new fans of an artist, but are sometimes criticized by longtime fans as not inclusive enough or necessary at all. It is also common for greatest hits albums to include new recordings, remixes or unreleased alternate takes of the hit songs, plus other new material as bonus tracks to increase appeal for longtime fans (who might otherwise already own the recordings included). At times, a greatest hits compilation marks the first album appearance of a successful single that was never attached to a previous studio album. Greatest hits albums usually are released after an artist or band ...

Alphabet City (album)
''Alphabet City'' is the fourth studio album by the English pop band ABC. It was originally released in August 1987, on the labels Mercury, Phonogram and Neutron, two years after their previous album '' How to Be a ... Zillionaire!'' Following a hiatus in which singer Martin Fry was being treated for Hodgkin's disease, it was recorded over a period of nine months, in sessions that took place at Marcus Recording Studios in London, assisted by Bernard Edwards, best known for his work with the American band Chic. The album's title and the titles of several tracks were inspired by the Alphabet City section of Manhattan, New York City, where Fry and Mark White lived for a time prior to the album's release. It peaked at No. 7 in the UK, making it their first album to reach the Top 10 since their debut ''The Lexicon of Love''. The album launched three charting singles in the UK. " When Smokey Sings", a tribute to Smokey Robinson, peaked at No. 11 on the UK singles chart; " The Night ...

Background "When Smokey Sings" and its B-side "Chicago" also topped the ''Billboard'' Hot Dance Club Play chart. The song reached 11 on the UK Singles Chart and became ABC's second American top-10 hit, peaking at No. 5 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. There is a slight difference in the lyrics between the album and single version in the bridge of the song. Beauty Stab
''Beauty Stab'' is the second studio album by English pop band ABC, released on 14 November 1983 by Neutron Records, Mercury Records and Vertigo Records. The album was recorded over a period of three months between August and September 1983, in sessions that took place at Sarm Studios East and West, Townhouse Studios and Abbey Road Studios. It was a departure from the stylised production of the band's debut studio album, '' The Lexicon of Love'' (1982), and featured a more guitar-oriented sound. The album was produced by ABC with Gary Langan, who had been the audio engineer on the band's debut studio album. The band employed the rhythm section of Andy Newmark (drums) and Alan Spenner (bass guitar) both of whom had recently recorded and toured with Roxy Music at the time. The cover photography was by Gered Mankowitz. On release, the album was received negatively by the majority of music critics. In a 1995 article, music journalist Simon Reynolds listed ''Beauty Stab'' among "the ...

"That Was Then but This Is Now" is a song by the English pop band ABC. It was released in October 1983 as the lead single from their second studio album, ''Beauty Stab''. It was the band's third entry on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100, peaking at No. 89. Music video The music video shows them playing on a stage behind a huge ''Risk''-style world map gameboard; scenes of the band playing, accompanied by various flags, are interspersed with scenes of a helicopter taking off and then exploding. Critical reception Upon its release in October 1983, it was "Single Of The Forthnight" in ''Smash Hits''. " art from the lousy chorus, I think it's one of the most exciting things they've done", Peter Martin wrote, "Fast and furious, the song still manages to retain a feeling of stylish grandeur that is the hallmark of ABC's work". The song features the heavily criticised lyric, "Can't complain, mustn't grumble, help yourself to another piece of apple crumble." Roddy Frame of Aztec Camera ce ...

"All of My Heart" is a song by English pop band ABC, from their debut studio album, '' The Lexicon of Love'' (1982). It was released as a single in the UK on 27 August 1982 and peaked at No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart. The B-side, "Overture", was an instrumental, orchestral medley of songs from ''The Lexicon of Love'', arranged by Anne Dudley. Critical reception In a retrospective review of the song, AllMusic critic Mike DeGagne wrote: "The lushness of the instruments and the small amounts of musical detail drape the body of the track, adding a slight classical feel to the song's flow." In 2005, Jess Harvell of ''Pitchfork'' listed "All of My Heart" as his favorite UK song of the post-punk "new pop" era, describing it as "ABC's slickest and most gorgeous single, and yet also possibly their most bitter." Harvell wrote: " Martin Fry alternates between open hearted and suspicious, warm and resentful with the turn of a phrase. The outro–a swirl of soundtrack strings, plucked ...
