A New Start (Degrassi High)
"A New Start" is the two-part premiere episode of the Canadian teen drama series ''Degrassi High''. It aired on CBC Television, CBC in its hour-long form on 6 November 1989 and on PBS in the United States on 13 January 1990. The episode was written by Yan Moore and directed by Kit Hood. It is the first of three episodes of ''Degrassi'' that depict abortion, followed by 2003's "Accidents Will Happen (Degrassi: The Next Generation), Accidents Will Happen" from ''Degrassi: The Next Generation'' and 2017's "#IRegretNothing" from ''Degrassi: Next Class''. In the episode, which revisits the cast of ''Degrassi Junior High'' as they begin high school, Erica Farrell (Angela Deiseach) discovers she is pregnant following a summer romance and contemplates an abortion and her anti-abortion twin sister Heather (Maureen Deiseach) becomes torn on supporting her. Degrassi High
''Degrassi High'' is a Canadian teen drama television series created by Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood. It is the third entry in the '' Degrassi'' franchise and the direct continuation of '' Degrassi Junior High'', and was broadcast on the CBC from 6 November 1989 to 18 February 1991. The series follows the lives of those attending the titular fictional school. It addresses a variety of topics, ranging from mundane coming-of-age dilemmas to serious and controversial topics such as abortion, cancer, suicide and HIV/AIDS. It was filmed entirely on-location in Toronto, with the Centennial College Story Arts Centre used as the school. The series was critically acclaimed, with particular praise afforded to the series premiere, " A New Start", which portrayed abortion. A small controversy arose involving the episode when PBS removed a scene of anti-abortion protesters against the wishes of Hood and Schuyler. Linda Schuyler
Linda Schuyler (; née Bawcutt; born February 12, 1948) is a Canadian television producer. She is best known for being the co-creator and producer of the ''Degrassi'' franchise, which has spanned five series over four decades. She is a co-founder of Playing With Time, Inc. (with Kit Hood), and Epitome Pictures (with Stephen Stohn), the production companies involved with the franchise over its 40-year-long history respectively. Born in London, Schuyler immigrated to Canada with her family in the 1950s. As a school teacher, she began creating short films, and formed a creative partnership with television commercial editor Kit Hood. In 1979, Schuyler purchased the rights to adapt the Kay Chorao book ''Ida Makes A Movie'' into a film, of which ultimately became the genesis of ''Degrassi''.
