''A Different Hunger'' is the only studio album by New Zealand singer-songwriter Fiona McDonald, released on 30 September 1999 by Flying Nun Records and Mushroom Records. Background and development Despite having interest in creating a solo album, McDonald had only worked with the bands Strawpeople and The Headless Chickens for the first few years of her career as she felt unprepared to embark on a solo career. However, after earning enough income from a television role, she was able to move into her own home and dedicate more time to writing songs for the project, inspired by introspective songwriters such as PJ Harvey and Elliott Smith. Much of ''A Different Hunger'' was recorded at London's Metropolis Studios. McDonald referred to recording overseas as "incredibly important" as it allowed her to avoid "making a record with inevitable New Zealand limitations in mind," although some parts were recorded in New Zealand at Auckland's York Street, Airforce, and Echo Studios. Fiona McDonald
Fiona Maude McDonald (born 1965) is a New Zealand pop singer and television personality. Singer McDonald's first involvement with music came through singing jingles for Auckland student radio station bFM. From that work she was asked to join Auckland band Diatribe which also included musician Greg Johnson. In the early '90s she teamed up with former bFM producers Mark Tierney and Paul Casserly who were looking for a singer for their new studio-only group, Strawpeople. Tom Larkin (musician)
Tom Larkin (born 18 September 1971) is a founding member of the New Zealand band Shihad, band manager, and music producer. He grew up in Wellington, New Zealand but now lives in Melbourne in Australia. He is often mentioned as one of the greatest hard rock drummers that New Zealand has ever produced. Early life and family Larkin was born in Wellington, New Zealand to parents Thomas Cedric Larkin and Sarah Marianne Williams. As a kid, he often played the drums so loud in his parents big Kelburn house in Wellington, that the neighbours sometimes complained. While at school at Wellington High in the late 1980s he met Jon Toogood and together they former Shihad back in 1988. The first gig was at the Clarendon Tavern in Courtenay Place which was the first of thousands of live gigs performed by the band over many years. Aaron Tokona
Aaron Arana Tokona (28 October 1975 – 20 June 2020) was a New Zealand guitarist and singer. Tokona was descended from Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngāti Maniapoto. This heritage played a significant role in his upbringing through his grandparents, who were well versed in Māoritanga, and inspired him as a performer after seeing other Māori artists, such as Billy T James and Prince Tui Teka. Tokona grew up in Naenae, Lower Hutt and attending Naenae College. It was while attending the school, that he took part in the Smokefree Rockquest that help launch his musical career. He performed as AHoriBuzz and was part of bands Weta, Cairo Knife Fight, Bongmaster and Fly My Pretties, and collaborated with some of New Zealand's most noted musicians. Rhodes Piano
The Rhodes piano (also known as the Fender Rhodes piano) is an electric piano invented by Harold Rhodes, which became popular in the 1970s. Like a conventional piano, the Rhodes generates sound with keys and hammers, but instead of strings, the hammers strike thin metal tines, which vibrate next to an electromagnetic pickup. The signal is then sent through a cable to an external keyboard amplifier and speaker. The instrument evolved from Rhodes's attempt to manufacture pianos while teaching recovering soldiers during World War II. Development continued after the war and into the following decade. Chris Matthews is a New Zealand rock musician. He has been a member of numerous bands, notably Children's Hour, This Kind of Punishment and The Headless Chickens for whom he was guitarist and lead vocalist, as well as writer or co-writer of many of their songs. The Official New Zealand Music Chart ( mi, Te Papa Tātai Waiata Matua o Aotearoa) is the weekly New Zealand top 40 singles and albums charts, issued weekly by Recorded Music NZ (formerly Recording Industry Association of New Zealand). "George" is a song by New Zealand rock band Headless Chickens, released as the lead single from their third studio album, '' Greedy'', in 1994. Charting as a double A-side with the Eskimos in Egypt mix of their 1991 song "Cruise Control", the single reached number one in the band's native New Zealand for four weeks in 1994 and 1995 and received a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ). Shihad
Shihad are a rock band formed in Wellington, New Zealand in 1988. The band consists of founders Tom Larkin (drums, backing vocals, samplers), Phil Knight (lead guitar, synthesiser, backing vocals) and Jon Toogood (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), who were joined by Karl Kippenberger (bass guitar, backing vocals) in 1991. The band were known as Pacifier between 2002 and 2004.
