A. Kanan
A. Kanan / Arkut Kannabhiran (18 June 1920 – 12 September 2004), more popularly known as A. Kanan, was an Indian vocalist in the Hindustani classical tradition and one of the legendary vocalist from Kirana Gharana. He is known for the khayal form of singing to which he lent his individuality. Early life Arkut Kannabhiran was born in Madras (present-day Chennai), in 1920. As he grew up he was interested in cricket as well as singing. He began his professional career joining the railways at the age of 18. In his 20s, while in Bombay (present-day Mumbai) for a cricket match, he auditioned for the All India Radio station there. The auditioners were so impressed by his singing voice that they offered him a slot of air time. His job saw him posted at Hyderabad and here he began taking lessons in Hindustani classical music from Pandit Lahanu Babu Rao. Pandit
A Pandit ( sa, पण्डित, paṇḍit; hi, पंडित; also spelled Pundit, pronounced ; abbreviated Pt.) is a man with specialised knowledge or a teacher of any field of knowledge whether it is shashtra (Holy Books) or shastra (Weapons) in Hinduism, particularly the Vedic scriptures, dharma, or Hindu philosophy; in colonial-era literature, the term generally refers to Brahmins specialized in Hindu law. Pandits (Brahmins) is the highest varna or class of sanatan dharma. Brahmins are both martial and preacher community. This community inculdes many surnames like Tyagi, Bhumihar, Mohyal, Chibber etc. Pandits can do agriculture also as they are among the biggest Zamindar (landlord) communities of India. Whereas, today the title is used for experts in other subjects, such as music. Malabika Kanan
Malabika Kanan (27 December 1930 – 17 February 2009) was an Indian classical vocalist. Biography Kanan was born in Lucknow on 27 December 1930 to Rabindralal Roy, a musicologist and a disciple of Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. In her early years she trained in the musical genres of dhrupad, dhamar and khyal for a number of years under her father. She also got training in Rabindrasangeet from Santidev Ghosh and Suchitra Mitra. She traveled with her father on musical concerts in many places within the country. Her first music rendering was in raga Ramkali on the All India Radio when she was 15 years old. Her first performance on stage followed the next year at the Tansen Sangeet Samaroh. Kanan married A. Kanan, another singer, on 28 February 1958, and developed a new style of singing by adopting his Kirana style. She was also trained by him in thumri. She was very proficient in singing bhajans.
