@lantic Rugby Sevens was the largest seven-a-side school rugby tournament in the world. It consists of a total of 256 teams from different high schools across South Africa and acted as a formal pathway for schoolboys to progress to the South African national sevens team and the 2016 Summer Olympics squad. History @lantic Rugby Sevens was founded in July 2007 after @lantic, a local South African ISP, saw the opportunity to develop talent at a junior level for the national sevens team and decided to invest in the community through sport. In 2008, the @lantic Rugby Sevens series hosted its first Champion of Champions tournament at Atomic Sport Academy. Harmony Sport Academy from Virginia, Free State, out played fifteen other teams to take the crown as the best schools sevens team in South Africa, that year. The South African national rugby sevens team competes in the World Rugby Sevens Series, the Rugby World Cup Sevens, the Summer Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games. Overall, the team has won the World Rugby Sevens Series 4 times, as well as having won 39 tournaments in the series. Rugby sevens at the 2016 Summer Olympics was held over six days in August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. The 2016 Olympics was the debut for rugby sevens at the Summer Olympics, though rugby union was last played at the 1924 games. The usual laws of rugby sevens applied. Craven Week
The Craven Week is an annual rugby union tournament organised for schoolboys in the Republic of South Africa. The tournament started in July 1964, and is named after the legendary Springbok rugby union player and coach Dr Danie Craven. The tournament has its humble beginnings in an idea by Piet Malan, then Springbok flanker, in 1949, around the time of the South African Rugby Board's 75th anniversary. He wanted schools to feature in the celebrations and approached Danie Craven in Potgietersrus on how this could be done. Dr Craven took the idea to his board who decided on getting the 15 schools unions together for a week. The man who kept the idea alive however was one Jan Preuyt, a former student at the University of Stellenbosch and teacher at Port Rex Technical School in East London. The Dubai Sevens is an annual rugby sevens and social event held at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai, UAE. Founded in 1970, the event is the longest running sports event in the Middle East.
