Cruise 1323 (call sign: 5DN) is one of Adelaide's longest running radio stations. In its 80+ years it has changed considerably. It was the first commercial station to begin broadcasting in South Australia. History Radio 5DN began operating as an experimental station in 1924 on a wavelength of "about 200 metres" (1500 kHz), with official services beginning on 24 February 1925. It began as the hobby of businessman and industrialist Ernest James Hume, a brother of Walter Reginald Hume, but soon grew to absorb the time and energy of the Hume family. Hume bought his transmitter, and some other equipment from radio pioneer Lance C. Jones, who ran station 5BQ in Westbourne Park. The purchase included the original call sign: "5Don N", which had been allocated to Jones in 1923. The origin of that call sign has been lost in the mists of time, but it may be the result of an early spelling alphabet (A for Arthur, C for Charlie, D for Don, etc.). FIVEaa (pronounced ''Five Double A'') is Adelaide's only commercial talkback radio station. The station has a range of programs including news, sports, current affairs, social issues, football calls, gardening, lifestyle, cars, travel and health. It is owned by Nova Entertainment. History 5AA commenced service in Kent Town on 14 March 1976 on the frequency 1390 AM. It was moved to 1386 AM with the introduction of 9 kHz spacing on the AM dial in 1978. The station now broadcasts on 1395 AM. 5AA commenced its life with a "Beautiful Music" format and quickly became Adelaide's number-1-rated radio station. In 1976, the only FM competition was ABC Classic FM. AM stations were ABC Radio, 5DN and music stations 5KA and 5AD. Nan Witcomb
Nancy "Nan" Witcomb is best known around the world for her simple poems published over 3 decades as "The Thoughts of Nanushka". In her home town of Adelaide, South Australia, she is also known as a broadcaster and raconteur and has made appearances on national television. Biography Trained as a nurse at the Adelaide Children's Hospital, Nan joined Australian National Airlines (later Ansett Australia) as a hostess in 1950, launching a 23-year career that she later documented in her memoir of the early days of hostessing "Up Here and Down There". Kevin Crease
Kevin John Crease (8 May 1936 – 12 April 2007) was a South Australian television presenter and news presenter. He was most noted for presenting South Australian edition of the Nine Network's'' National Nine News'' with Rob Kelvin between 1987 and 2007. Early life Born in North Adelaide and raised in the working class seaside suburb of Semaphore, Crease was the eldest of four children. He was a prodigious public speaker from a young age and won the Year 7 senior school debating championship. He started his working life as a clerical worker in 1952 with Shell before becoming a copy boy and later cadet at Adelaide's '' The News'' newspaper, where he quickly "fell foul of the chief-of-staff" and was sacked. The Elder Conservatorium of Music, also known as "The Con", is Australia's senior academy of music and is located in the centre of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. It is named in honour of its benefactor, Sir Thomas Elder. David William Hookes (3 May 1955 – 19 January 2004) grew up in Torrensville and was a South Australian and Australian cricketer, broadcaster and coach of the Victorian cricket team. An aggressive left-handed batsman, Hookes usually batted in the middle order. His international career got off to a sensational start in the Centenary Test at Melbourne in 1977 when he hit England captain Tony Greig for five consecutive boundaries, but a combination of circumstances ensured that he never became a regular in the Australian team. Kenneth George (KG) Cunningham (born 26 July 1939 in Adelaide, South Australia) is an Australian radio personality, and a former cricketer and football umpire. Sporting career Cunningham had a first-class cricket career from the 1960/61 to 1973/74 seasons with the South Australian state cricket team in the Sheffield Shield. A left-hand batsman, he was part of the sides that won the Shield in 1963–64 and 1968–69, and went on to play 97 first-class matches in a solid career, averaging 37 with the bat. He was the SA team captain in 7 matches from 1971 to 1973. He toured New Zealand in 1966–67 with the Australian team captained by Les Favell. The Australian Entertainment Mo Awards (commonly known informally as the Mo Awards) were an annual Australian entertainment industry award, that where established in 1975, to recognise achievements in live entertainment in Australia. They were last awarded in 2016. Lucky Grills, actor and comedian came up with the idea to create an awards show to celebrate Australian Variety, during a meeting in 1975. The Mo Awards, initially were founded as the Star Awards and were a state honour in New South Wales only, local entertainers started the awards to promote the live entertainment industry in New South Wales.
