54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment
The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment is a ceremonial Foot guards regiment of the Massachusetts Army National Guard. It takes its name from the famous 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and is a public duties unit. History The 54th assumes the history of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, which preceded it and which fought in the American Civil War, being at that time the second African-American regiment. The 54th was made famous through its representation in the 1989 film '' Glory''. The unit was raised on November 21, 2008, and designated the Massachusetts National Guard ceremonial unit, forming an honor guard at military funerals and other state functions. Regiment
A regiment is a military unit. Its role and size varies markedly, depending on the country, service and/or a specialisation. Massachusetts Army National Guard
The Massachusetts National Guard is the National Guard component for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Founded as the Massachusetts Bay Colonial Militia on December 13, 1636, it contains the oldest units in the United States Army. What is today's Massachusetts National Guard evolved through many different forms. Originally founded as a defensive militia for Puritan colonists in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the militia evolved into a highly organized and armed fighting force. Public Duties
Public duties are performed by military personnel, and usually have a ceremonial or historic significance rather than an overtly operational role.
