48th Berlin International Film Festival
The 48th annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from 11 to 22 February 1998. The festival opened with the Irish film ''The Boxer'' by Jim Sheridan. Francis Ford Coppola's '' The Rainmaker'' was selected as the closing night film. The Golden Bear was awarded to Brazilian-French film ''Central Station'' directed by Walter Salles. The retrospective dedicated to ''Siodmak Bros.'', titled Siodmak Bros. Berlin – London – Paris – Hollywood was shown at the festival. The Boxer (1997 Film)
''The Boxer'' is a 1997 Irish sports-drama film written and directed by Jim Sheridan and co-written by Terry George. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Emily Watson, and Brian Cox, the film centers on the life of a boxer and former Provisional IRA volunteer Danny Flynn, played by Day-Lewis, who is trying to "go straight" after his release from prison. The film is the third collaboration between Sheridan and Day-Lewis, and portrays the increase of splinter groups within the IRA. In preparation for the role, Daniel Day-Lewis trained as a boxer in Ireland for a year. Plot Former Irish pugilist and Provisional IRA member Danny Flynn (Daniel Day-Lewis) returns home to Belfast from a 14-year stint in prison at the age of 32. Helmut Dietl
Helmut Dietl (; 22 June 1944 – 30 March 2015) was a German film director and author from Bad Wiessee. Work After leaving grammar school in 1958, Dietl completed a degree in theatre studies and history of art. He then became head of photography and later assistant director to the Munich Kammerspiele theatre. He first achieved directorial success with the TV series '' Monaco Franze'', eventually moving on to create several notable films with the aid of Patrick Süskind's writing. In 1998, he was a member of the judging panel at the 48th Berlin International Film Festival. He died in Munich on 30 March 2015. Neil Jordan
Neil Patrick Jordan (born 25 February 1950) is an Irish film director, screenwriter, novelist and short-story writer. ''The Butcher Boy'' is a 1997 Irish black comedy film directed by Neil Jordan. The film was based on Patrick McCabe’s 1992 novel of the same name and McCabe co-wrote the screenplay with Jordan.
