38th Field Artillery Regiment (United States)
The 38th Field Artillery Regiment is a field artillery regiment of the United States Army. History On August 17, 1918, the 38th Field Artillery was organized as a regiment at Camp Lewis, Washington. It trained at that station until February 10, 1919, when the regiment was demobilized. Subsequently, on October 1, 1933, the 38th Field Artillery Regiment was reconstituted as an inactive unit of the regular Army. The 38th Field Artillery next appears as a part of the Second Infantry Division. On October 10, 1939, the Fifteenth Field Artillery Regiment at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, was re-organized and given a 3rd battalion. These weapons are specialized for mobility, tactical proficiency, short range, long range, and extremely long range target engagement. Until the early 20th century, field artillery were also known as foot artillery, for while the guns were pulled by beasts of burden (often horses), the gun crews would usually march on foot, thus providing fire support mainly to the infantry. This was in contrast to horse artillery, whose emphasis on speed while supporting cavalry units necessitated lighter guns and crews riding on horseback. Whereas horse artillery has been superseded by self-propelled artillery, field artillery has survived to this day both in name and mission, albeit with motor vehicles towing the guns (this towed artillery arrangement is often called mobile artillery), carrying the crews and transporting the ammunition. The M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (M270 MLRS) is an American-developed armored, self-propelled, multiple rocket launcher. The U.S. Army variant of the MLRS vehicle is based on the chassis of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The first M270s were delivered in 1983. The 37th Field Artillery Regiment is a field artillery regiment of the United States Army, and parent regiment under the U.S. Army Regimental System. The regiment was first constituted 5 July 1918 in the National Army. The regiment served with the 10th Division during World War I, and the 2nd Infantry Division during World War II. Elements of the regiment have served with the 2nd Infantry Division, 6th Infantry Division, 79th Infantry Division, and 172nd Infantry Brigade, among other units.
