The 31st Grey Cup was played on November 27, 1943, before 16,423 fans at Varsity Stadium at Toronto. The Hamilton Flying Wildcats defeated the Winnipeg RCAF Bombers 23–14. Curiously, both teams wore red and white jerseys and one team had to wear gold and blue uniforms. Hamilton wore the Bombers traditional gold and blue while Winnipeg was allowed to keep its red jerseys. Varsity Stadium is an outdoor collegiate football stadium located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is home to the Toronto Varsity Blues, the athletic teams of the University of Toronto. Winnipeg RCAF Bombers
The Winnipeg RCAF Bombers were a Canadian football team during World War II. They lost the 30th Grey Cup and 31st Grey Cup games. In 1942, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers didn't have any competition for the regular season so they created their own competition. With an abundance of players available, the Blue Bombers split the players into two teams. The civilian men played for a team known simply as the ''Bombers'' and the servicemen played for the ''RCAF Flyers''. A third team in the Winnipeg City League was the University of Manitoba Bisons who were a junior team. Upon completion of the 1942 Winnipeg City League season, the teams were dissolved and a new combined team was formed for playoff competition. On November 4, 1942, the Winnipeg RCAF Bombers were created and 34 players were selected to the team. Hamilton Flying Wildcats
The Hamilton Wildcats were a Canadian football team based in Hamilton, Ontario that played in the Ontario Rugby Football Union (ORFU) from 1941 to 1947, and in the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU) from 1948 to 1949. Red Threlfall
Reginald H. "Red" Threlfall (June 2, 1903 – February 14, 1971) was an American football, basketball and Canadian football coach. He served as the head football coach at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota, from 1934 to 1937, compiling a record of 17–19–2. Threlfall was the head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL) from 1938 to 1944. Athletic career Threlfall played tackle for four years at Waltham High School in Waltham, Massachusetts. He enrolled at Purdue University in 1922, but financial difficulties forced him to leave. He returned to Purdue in 1923 and played on the freshman football team. He played tackle and center for the varsity team from 1924 to 1926. He was also a member of the school's wrestling team. Brian Timmis
Brian Mercer "Old Man of the Mountain" Timmis (December 5, 1899 – August 22, 1971) was a star senior Canadian football player in the Saskatchewan Rugby Football Union (SRFU) and Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU) for a combined 17 seasons, mainly for the Hamilton Tigers. He is a three-time Grey Cup champion as a player, having won with the Tigers in 1928, 1929, and 1932. He later coached the Hamilton Flying Wildcats, leading them to the 1943 Grey Cup championship. He was an inaugural member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1963 and was also inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.
