2nd Reserve Army (Soviet Union)
The Reserve Armies were a group of armies formed by the Soviet Union's Red Army during World War II. Formed to control the training of newly formed units in the rear areas and provide army level headquarters to reconstitute destroyed armies or to form new armies. The Workers' and Peasants' Red Army ( Russian: Рабо́че-крестья́нская Кра́сная армия),) often shortened to the Red Army, was the army and air force of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and, after 1922, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The 64th Army (russian: 64-я армия) was a field army established by the Soviet Union's Red Army during the Second World War. Formed as the 1st Reserve Army as part of the Reserve of the Supreme High Command in April 1942, the formation was designated as the 64th Army in July 1942. The 1st Guards Army was a Soviet Guards field army that fought on the Eastern Front during World War II. First Formation On August 6, 1942, the army formed from the 2nd Reserve Army with five Guards Rifle Divisions, the 37th, 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st. On August 9, the army was incorporated into Southeastern Front. On August 18, it was transferred to the Stalingrad Front (renamed Don Front on September 30). The Red Army's 60th Army was a Soviet field army during the Second World War. It was first formed in reserve in the Moscow Military District in October 1941, but soon was disbanded.
