The 2nd Military District was an administrative district of the Australian Army that covered most of New South Wales, with its headquarters in Sydney. In early 1942, elements of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) proposed an invasion of mainland Australia. The Australian Army is the principal land warfare force of Australia, a part of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) along with the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force.
