Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base is a joint installation shared by various active component and reserve component military units, as well as aircraft flight operations of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) under the aegis of the nearby Johnson Space Center. The host wing for the installation is the Texas Air National Guard's 147th Attack Wing (147 ATKW). Opened in 1917, Ellington Field was one of thirty-two Air Service training camps established after the United States entry into World War I. It is named for First Lieutenant Eric Ellington, a U.S. Army aviator who was killed in a plane crash in San Diego, California in 1913. Camp Logan
Camp Logan was a World War I-era army training camp in Houston, Texas named after U.S. Senator and Civil War General John A. Logan. The site of the camp is now primarily occupied by Memorial Park where it borders the Crestwood neighborhood, near Memorial Elementary School. Some chunks of concrete, many building foundations, and extensive trenches used for training or middens still remain in the heavily forested park. Many of the trails through the park in this area trace the routes of old Camp Logan roads. One stretch of a Camp Logan road remains in original condition, that being the shell-surfaced service road to the golf course. Genoa Township, Houston, Texas
Genoa is an area in Houston, Texas, United States located about southeast of Downtown Houston; it was formerly a distinct unincorporated area in Harris County. History J. H. Burnett established Genoa in 1892; he gave the community the name "Genoa" because he believed that the climate was similar to the climate of Genoa, Italy. The post office opened during that year. The founder built a railroad depot serving the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad, five houses, one hotel, and one store. The community was located along a main street that is now known as Almeda Genoa Road (the road from Almeda to Genoa). Eric Ellington
Eric Ellington (May 15, 1889 – November 24, 1913) was a United States Naval and later Army officer. He was one of the first U. S. servicemen to be killed in an airplane crash. A United States Naval Academy graduate, his nickname at the Academy was "Polly". Early life Ellington was born in North Carolina in 1889 to Sheriff Jesse T. Ellington and his second wife Sallie Williamson. He had 6 half siblings from his father's first marriage. His mother died in 1901 when Eric was 12 and he went to live with an older half-brother John Ellington and finished grade school. He graduated from high school in 1905 at 16. U.S. Navy Ellington started at the Naval Academy at sixteen. He graduated in 1909 third in his class and received a Bachelor's Degree.
