20th Division (German Empire)
The 20th Division (''20. Division'') was a unit of the Prussian/German Army. It was formed on October 11, 1866, and was headquartered in Hannover. The division was subordinated in peacetime to the X Army Corps (''X. Armeekorps''). The division was disbanded in 1919 during the demobilization of the German Army after World War I. Recruitment During the Franco-Prussian War, the division was a mixed unit, with Hannoverian, Brunswick and Westphalian elements. It was subsequently reorganized so that it was recruited primarily from the former Kingdom of Hannover, which had become the Prussian Province of Hanover after 1866, along with the Duchy of Brunswick. Combat chronicle During the Franco-Prussian War, the 20th Infantry Division fought in the battles of Mars-la-Tour and Gravelotte, and then in the Siege of Metz. 20th (Light) Division
The 20th (Light) Division was an infantry division of the British Army, part of Kitchener's Army, raised in the First World War. The division was formed in September 1914 as part of the K2 Army Group. The division landed in France July 1915 and spent the duration of the First World War in action on the Western Front. The division was disbanded after the end of the war in early 1919. History 1914–15 Formation and training The 20th (Light) Division was authorised on 11 September 1914 and was to be composed of newly raised battalions from quick marching rifle and light infantry regiments. The 59th and 60th Brigades were concentrated at Blackdown with the Division Headquarters and other division troops. 20th Armored Division (United States)
The 20th Armored Division was an armored division of the United States Army that fought in World War II. It was activated on 15 March 1943 at Camp Campbell in Kentucky. The division had no official name although it did associate itself with the nickname "Armoraiders" while in training at Camp Campbell. After certification as a liberating division by the US Army Center of Military History on 28 October 1988, and the awarding of a Liberation Certificate by the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, veterans of the division adopted the name ''Liberators." 20th Armoured Division (Greece)
The 20th Armoured Division "Macedonia" ( el, 20ή Τεθωρακισμένη Μεραρχία «ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΙΑ» ''Ikosti Tethorakimeni Merarhia «MAKEDONIA»'', abbrev. XX ΤΘΜ) is the only armoured division of the Hellenic Army. It is headquartered in Kavala, Macedonia. History The Hellenic Army's first attempt to form an armoured/mechanized division was the 19th Mechanized Division in early 1941, which was destroyed during the German invasion of Greece. These efforts were resumed after Liberation, with mechanized units being established in 1945 and fighting in the Greek Civil War of 1946–49. The same period saw also the arrival of the first true tanks in Greece, the British Centaur tanks, which only began to be employed in 1947. From 1950 on, the Hellenic Army began receiving M24 Chaffee tanks and M18 Hellcat tank destroyers. 20th Panzer Division (Wehrmacht)
The 20th Panzer Division ( en, 20th Tank Division) was an armoured division in the German Army during World War II. It was created from parts of the 19th Infantry Division. The division fought exclusively on the Eastern Front, taking part in the battles of Moscow and Kursk. It eventually surrendered to US and Soviet forces in Czechoslovakia in May 1945. History The 20th Panzer Division was formed on 15 October 1940 after the decision had been made to weaken the existing German tank divisions to create new ones. The new division drew units from various active and reserve units, among them the 19th Infantry Division which had been converted to a tank division itself, having become the 19th Panzer Division. The 20th Division was one of the divisions of the People's Army of the Republic that were organized during the Spanish Civil War on the basis of the Mixed Brigades. Situated on the Andalusian front, the division played a minor role. History The unit was created on April 3, 1937, within the Southern Army. It was made up of the 52nd (in Hinojosa del Duque), 89th (Torredonjimeno) and 92nd (Andújar) mixed brigades. The 20th Division, which had its headquarters in Andújar, came under the command of Carlos García Vallejo. Subsequently, command of the unit fell to Urbano Orad de la Torre. The German 20th Infantry Division was an infantry division of Nazi Germany. History The was established in 1934 under the cover name ''Reichswehrdienststelle Hamburg'', and did not assume its bona-fide designation until the creation of the Wehrmacht was announced in October 1935. In the autumn of 1937 it was upgraded to a fully motorized division.Most German divisions during the World War II era had no transport for the infantry and used horses to tow their artillery; German industry could not turn out sufficient motor transport while also trying to meet other military requirements. 20th Infantry Division ( pl, 20. Dywizja Piechoty) was an infantry division of the Polish Army during the interbellum period, which took part in the Polish September Campaign. It was formed in 1920 from the reorganization of the 2nd Lithuanian-Belarusian Division. Stationed in Baranavichy () and commanded by Colonel Wilhelm Lawicz-Liszka.
