2015 Tour Down Under
The 2015 Santos Tour Down Under was the 17th edition of the Tour Down Under stage race. It took place from 20 to 25 January in and around Adelaide, South Australia, and was the first race of the 2015 UCI World Tour. The overall winner was Rohan Dennis. Schedule Participating teams As the Tour Down Under is a UCI World Tour event, all 17 UCI ProTeams were invited automatically and obligated to send a squad. Australian team received a wildcard invitation and, together with a selection of Australian riders forming the squad, this formed the event's 19 team peloton. Cadel Evans stated that it would be his last race in his professional career. 2015 UCI World Tour
The 2015 UCI World Tour was the seventh edition of the ranking system launched by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in 2009. The series started with the opening stage of the 2015 Tour Down Under, Tour Down Under on 20 January, and concluded with 2015 Il Lombardia, Il Lombardia on 4 October. For the second successive year, Spain's Alejandro Valverde won the World Tour individual points title, amassing 675 points over the course of the season. The rider finished 201 points clear of his closest rival and compatriot Joaquim Rodríguez of , while Colombian rider Nairo Quintana was third – also for the – 17 points behind Rodríguez and 218 points in arrears of Valverde. Norwood, South Australia
Norwood is a suburb of Adelaide, about east of the Adelaide city centre. The suburb is in the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, whose predecessor was the oldest South Australian local government municipality. History Before British colonisation of South Australia and subsequent European settlement, Norwood was inhabited by one of the groups who later collectively became known as the Kaurna peoples. In a road bicycle race, the peloton (from French, originally meaning 'platoon') is the main group or pack of riders. Riders in a group save energy by riding close ( drafting or slipstreaming) to (particularly behind) other riders. The reduction in drag is dramatic; riding in the middle of a well-developed group, drag can be reduced to as little as 5%–10%. Exploitation of this potential energy saving leads to complex cooperative and competitive interactions between riders and teams in race tactics. UCI ProTour
The UCI ProTour was a series of road bicycle races in Europe, Australia and Canada organised by the UCI (International Cycling Union). Created by Hein Verbruggen, former president of the UCI, it comprises a number of 'ProTour' cycling teams, each of whom are required to compete in every round of the series. It was initially the basis of a season long competition for rankings points, created for 2005 to replace the UCI Road World Cup series, which ended at the end of the 2004 season (although the World Cup did not include any stage races). The ProTour was the subject of continuing disputes involving the UCI, cycling teams, and the organizers of the world's most prominent bicycle races (most notably, the Grand Tours), and in 2009 and 2010 the ranking element of the ProTour was superseded by the UCI World Ranking. Wouter Wippert (born 14 August 1990) is a Dutch professional road racing cyclist, who most recently rode for UCI Continental team . Willunga, South Australia
Willunga is a town located to the south of Adelaide, South Australia in the City of Onkaparinga local government area, 47 km from the Adelaide city centre. This town has been considered a suburb of the Adelaide metropolitan area, and it is located within the McLaren Vale wine-growing region. In the 2016 census, Willunga recorded a population of 2,308. McLaren Vale, South Australia
McLaren Vale is a town and locality in the Australian state of South Australia located about south of the Adelaide city centre and about south of the municipal seat at Noarlunga Centre. History The township was formed in 1923 from a merging of the two original villages of Gloucester and Bellevue, which were established in the 1840s. Boundaries for the locality were defined on 13 July 1995 for the portion within the former City of Noarlunga with the portion in the former District Council of Willunga being added on 28 January 1999. Steele Von Hoff (born 31 December 1987) is an Australian road racing cyclist, who most recently rode for Australian amateur team InForm TMX MAKE. Mount Barker, South Australia
Mount Barker is a city in South Australia. Located approximately 33 kilometres (21 miles) from the Adelaide city centre, it is home to 16,629 residents. It is the seat of the District Council of Mount Barker, the largest town in the Adelaide Hills, as well as one of the fastest-growing areas in the state.
