2014 Mauritanian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Mauritania on 21 June 2014, with a second round planned for 5 July if no candidate received more than 50% of the vote. The result was a first round victory for incumbent President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz of the Union for the Republic, who received 82% of the vote. Most of the opposition parties boycotted the election. Background Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was the incumbent President of Mauritania at the time of the election and had been in office since 2009. A career soldier and high-ranking officer, he was a leading figure in the August 2005 coup that deposed President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya, and in August 2008 he led another coup, which toppled President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi. Ibrahima Moctar Sarr ( ar, إبراهيما مختار صار; Serer: Ibrahema Muktar Saar; born 1949) is a Mauritanian journalist and politician of the Serer patrilineage ''Saar'' (or ''Sarr''). The Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement (IRA or IRA-Mauritania; French: ''Initiative pour la Resurgence du mouvement Abolitioniste'') is an anti-slavery group in Mauritania headed by Biram Dah Abeid. Mauritania is estimated to have between 140,000 and 600,000 slaves. The group has a "network of nine thousand activists" according to journalist Alexis Okeowo. 2009 Mauritanian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Mauritania on 18 July 2009. Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who led the 2008 coup d'état, won a narrow first-round majority in the election, according to official results. A second round, if necessary, would have been held on 1 August 2009. Following the coup which deposed President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi on 6 August 2008, the new junta (the High Council of State) promised that a presidential election would be held "as soon as possible". The election was subsequently scheduled for 6 June 2009. Abdel Aziz, who was President of the High Council of State, stepped down in April 2009 in order to stand as a candidate.
