General elections were held in Malawi on 19 May 2009. Incumbent President Bingu wa Mutharika ran for re-election; his main opponent was John Tembo, the president of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Bingu Wa Mutharika
Bingu wa Mutharika (; born Brightson Webster Ryson Thom; 24 February 1934 – 5 April 2012) was a Malawian politician and economist who was President of Malawi from May 2004 until his death in April 2012. He was also President of the Democratic Progressive Party, which he founded in February 2005; it obtained a majority in Malawi's parliament in the 2009 general election. During his two terms in office, he was noted for being the Chairperson of the African Union in 2010–2011, as well as for several domestic controversies. In 2009, he purchased a private presidential jet for $13.26 million. This was followed almost immediately by a nationwide fuel shortage, which was officially blamed on logistical problems but was more likely due to the hard currency shortage caused by the freezing of aid by the international community. The Maravi People's Party (MPP) is a political party in Malawi. History The party was established in June 2007 by Uladi Mussa and Paul Maulidi after Mussa left the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). However, after Maulidi called for the party to join the DPP in an electoral alliance, he was expelled from the party, subsequently joining the DPP. In the 2009 general elections the party nominated eleven candidates, but only won a single seat, Salima North, which was taken by Mussa. Congress For National Unity
The Congress for National Unity (CONU) is a political party in Malawi led by Daniel Kamfosi Nkhumbwe. History The party was established in March 1999. It contested the June 1999 general elections, nominating Nkhumbwe as its presidential candidate. He finished fourth out of five candidates with 0.5% of the vote. In the National Assembly elections the party ran in 31 constituencies, although Nkhumbwe was its candidate in 27 of them. It received just 0.07% of the vote, failing to win a seat. The party did not nominate a candidate for president in the 2004 elections. Although it only ran two candidates in the National Assembly elections (Nkhumbwe and Richard Mwaila), its vote share increased to 0.23%. People's Progressive Movement (Malawi)
The People's Progressive Movement (PPM) is a political party in Malawi. At the elections of 20 May 2004, its candidate for president Aleke Banda won 2.5% and the party was part of the Mgwirizano Coalition, that won 27 out of 194 seats. Aleke Banda was the close friend of hastings Kamuzu Banda in 1956. He was among the people who founded the Nyasaland Congress Party. He was also saved as Ministry of Agriculture in the United Democratic Front (UDF) during Bakali Muluzi's time. He left UDF together with Mark Katsonga Phiri and formed their party after there was disagreement with Muluzi about the Presidency of Bingu wa Munthalika. The United Democratic Front is a political party in Malawi founded in 1992 by Bakili Muluzi. It claims to be a liberal party in Malawi and is mainly strong in the southern region populated by ethnic Yao. Bakili Muluzi was President of Malawi from 1994 to 2004. Dindi Gowa Nyasulu (August 3, 1944 – December 11, 2012) was a renowned engineer, a Malawian politician and former head of AFORD, Malawi's fifth largest political party. He was born in Luwuchi village in Rumphi to Amos Gowa Nyasulu and Mary Ana Nyaukandawire. He died on December 11, 2012, in South Africa. At the time of his death, his name was associated to the design of many major roads and bridges in the Republic of Malawi.
