The 2008 Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Fútbol de la Serie A (known as the 2008 Copa Pílsener Serie A for sponsorship reasons) was the 50th season of the Ecuadorian Serie A de Ecuador, Serie A, Ecuador's premier football (soccer), football league. The three-stage season ran from February 8 and December 7. Sociedad Deportivo Quito, Deportivo Quito became the league champion on December 3 by defeating Club Social y Deportivo Macará, Macará 2-1 in Latacunga. It is Deportivo Quito's 3rd title, and first in 40 years. Format The format for 2008 was new, but similar to the 2007 Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Fútbol Serie A, 2007 Serie A. The Liga Pro Betcris, simply known as the Liga Pro, or the Serie A, is a professional football league in Ecuador. At the top of the Ecuadorian football league system, it is the country's premier football competition. Contested by sixteen clubs, it operates a system of promotion and relegation with the Serie B, the lower level of the Primera Categoría. The season runs from February to December and is usually contested in multiple stages. The main sponsor is Betcris and it is known as Liga Pro Betcris. While initially not a league, the Serie A has its roots in the national championship between the top teams of Ecuador's two regional leagues. For the first nine editions, teams from Guayaquil and Quito qualified to the competition through their professional regional leagues.
