The 28th Toronto International Film Festival ran from September 4 to September 13, 2003. A total of 336 films (252 feature length and 84 short films) from 55 countries were screened during the festival. Of the feature films, 73% were world, international, or North American premieres. The Barbarian Invasions
''The Barbarian Invasions'' (french: Les Invasions barbares) is a 2003 Canadian-French sex comedy-drama film written and directed by Denys Arcand and starring Rémy Girard, Stéphane Rousseau and Marie-Josée Croze. The film is a sequel to Arcand's 1986 film ''The Decline of the American Empire'', continuing the story of the character Rémy, a womanizing history professor now terminally ill with cancer. The sequel was a result of Arcand's longtime desire to make a film about a character close to death, also incorporating a response to the September 11 attacks of 2001. It was produced by companies from both Canada and France, and shot mainly in Montreal, also employing a former hospital and property near Lake Memphremagog. The film received a positive response from critics and became one of Arcand's biggest financial successes. Achero Mañas
Achero Mañas (born Achero Mañas Amyach, 5 September 1966) is a Spanish film director and former actor. He made three successful short films before winning recognition and several awards for his feature film debut ''El Bola''. Biography Mañas was born in Madrid to actress Paloma Lorena and playwright Alfredo Mañas. Growing up in the neighbourhoods of Carabanchel and Estrella, he was surrounded and influenced by theatre, literature, and art from an early age, and this guided his academic pursuits and eventual career. He studied painting for 3 years at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios. At the same time, he acted in stage productions and held sporadic roles in cinema. Marco Bellocchio (; born 9 November 1939) is an Italian film director, screenwriter, and actor. ''Buongiorno, notte'' (''Good Morning, Night'') is an Italian film released in 2003 and directed by Marco Bellocchio. The title of the feature film, ''Good Morning, Night'', is taken from a poem by Emily Dickinson. The plot is freely adapted from the 1988 book ''The Prisoner'' by the former brigadeist Anna Laura Braghetti, which tells of the 1978 kidnapping, detention and murder of Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades. Plot A small group of terrorists of the Red Brigades rent an apartment. They kidnap Aldo Moro, former prime minister of Italy and leader of the ''Democrazia Cristiana'' (Christian democracy) party. Moro writes many letters to politicians, Pope Paul VI, and his family, but the Italian government refuses to negotiate. Peter Webber (born 1968) is a British film and television director and producer whose debut feature film as a director was '' Girl with a Pearl Earring'' (2003). Robert Altman
Robert Bernard Altman ( ; February 20, 1925 – November 20, 2006) was an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was a five-time nominee of the Academy Award for Best Director and is considered an enduring figure from the New Hollywood era. Altman's style of filmmaking covered many genres, but usually with a " subversive" twist which typically relied on satire and humor to express his personal views. Plot ''The Company'' is composed of stories gathered from the dancers, choreographers, and staff of the Joffrey Ballet. Most of the roles are played by company members. John Irvin
John Irvin (born 7 May 1940) is an English film director. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, he began his career by directing a number of documentaries and television works, including the BBC adaptation of John le Carré's '' Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy''.
