2024 Anti-refugee Riots In Turkey
In early July 2024, Turkey experienced a surge of anti-Syrian riots driven by anti-refugee sentiment. Caused by the molestation of a young girl, riots began in Kayseri, and spread across Turkey. Background Turkey has the most refugees of any country in the world. The largest population is the Syrian refugees, with more than 3.6 million registered refugees, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the country. Kayseri itself has around 83,000. There is a far amount of xenophobia against the Syrians, with a 2024 survey by the UNCHR finding that 77% of respondents in Turkey supported closing the border to refugees, the highest in the world. Ümit ÖzdaÄŸ (; born 3 March 1961, Tokyo) is a Turkish politician and the current leader of the Victory Party. He was deputy leader of the far-right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) from November 2015 to February 2016. He announced his candidacy for the party leadership for the 8th MHP Ordinary Congress in 2006, but had his membership revoked two days later. After returning to the party following a successful lawsuit, he again announced his candidacy for the MHP leadership in April 2016 for the 2016 Nationalist Movement Party Extraordinary Congress, which was eventually called off after numerous legal disputes. 2025 Istanbul Alcohol Poisonings
In 2025, a number of poisoning deaths related to bootleg alcohol consumption occurred in Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey. This included a surge of victims within a 72-hour period in January 2025, during which at least 30 people died. As of March 8, at least 160 people have been reported dead, and 230 others have been hospitalized, including at least 40 critically. The deaths were attributed primarily to methanol poisoning from illegally produced alcohol. Background This incident followed several outbreaks of alcohol poisoning in Istanbul, including one in late 2024, during which 110 people were sickened after consuming tainted alcohol in Istanbul, resulting in at least 48 deaths.
