2025 Duhok Axe Attack
On 1 April 2025, a Syrian national went on a short-lived spree of attacks against Assyrians celebrating the annual Kha b-Nisan festival in Duhok. Two people were injured from the attacks, while other sources suggest that an additional third person from the Asayish was injured. Days after the attack, the perpetrator was revealed to be a Syrian refugee from Duhok, who had been indoctrinated by ISIS before carrying out the attack. Timeline Attack The attacker initially hid the weapons in a bag until making his way to the scene of parades for the Assyrian New Year. Videos of the attack surfaced on social media that featured the attacker yelling ''"Dawla Islam"'' (), or "Islamic State" as he ran towards the marching crowd, before being pinned down to the ground by Assyrians at the scene. Alqosh
Alqosh (, , , alternatively spelled Alkosh, Alqoš, or Alqush) is a town in the Nineveh Plains of northern Iraq, a sub-district of the Tel Kaif District situated 45 km north of the city of Mosul. The inhabitants of Alqosh are Assyrian people, Assyrians who since the 18th century now mostly adhere to the Chaldean Catholic Church. During the Iron Age, the Alqosh plain appears to have been home to the small regional kingdom of Qumāne, but was subsequently annexed by Assyria. Landmarks The town of Alqosh is set at the foot of a mountain known as ''ṭūrəd-‘Alquš'' meaning “the mountain of Alqosh”. The most common forms are religious persecution, racism, and political persecution, though there is naturally some overlap between these terms. The inflicting of suffering, harassment, imprisonment, internment, fear or pain are all factors that may establish persecution, but not all suffering will necessarily establish persecution. 2024 Wakeley Church Stabbing
On 15 April 2024, at approximately 7:15pm local time, a knife attack took place at Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. During a live-streamed sermon, the attacker walked up to the pulpit, first stabbing bishop Mari Emmanuel, resulting in permanent vision loss in Emmanuel's right eye, before stabbing a priest and injuring another churchgoer. While no one was killed, this attack was the second stabbing incident to have taken place in Sydney in two days, following the deadly mass stabbing at Bondi Junction. The New South Wales Police Force have arrested a 16-year-old male with a "long history of behaviour consistent with a mental illness or intellectual disability" over the attack. They have classified the stabbing as a terrorist attack that was "religiously or ideologically" motivated, but have not released the name of the suspect.
