2024 Abkhazian Protests
Protests in the Political status of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, partially recognized Abkhazia, Republic of Abkhazia began on 11 November 2024 after the arrest of five opposition activists who opposed an investment agreement with Russia. Protesters blocked roads in Sukhumi and attempted to storm the State Security Service of Abkhazia, State Security Service building, demanding the release of detainees. On 12 November the activists were released. Abkhazia, officially the Republic of Abkhazia, is a List of states with limited recognition, partially recognised state in the South Caucasus, on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, at the intersection of Eastern Europe and West Asia. The People's Assembly – Parliament of the Republic of Abkhazia (, ka, აფხაზეთის ე.წ რესპუბლიკის სახალხო კრება, tr, ) is the unicameral legislature of the Abkhazia, Republic of Abkhazia. Composition The People's Assembly has 35 members, elected for five-year terms in single-seat constituency, constituencies. On 30 July 2015, Parliament failed to support a constitutional amendment increasing the number of members to 45 and introducing a mixed electoral system. Aitaira (; lit. ''Revival'') is a public association in Abkhazia. It is co-chaired by former prime minister Leonid Lakerbaia. Amtsakhara () is a political party in Abkhazia. Foundation On 31 March 1999, Amtsakhara was founded on the initiative of Sergei Dbar, Vladimir Nachach, Aki Ardzinba and Garik Samanba and a number of others as a public organisation uniting veterans of the 1992–1993 war with Georgia.
