2023 Ards And North Down Borough Council Election
The 2023 election to Ards and North Down Borough Council was held on 18 May 2023, alongside other local elections in Northern Ireland, two weeks after local elections in England. The Northern Ireland elections were delayed by 2 weeks to avoid overlapping with the coronation of King Charles III. They returned 40 members to the council via Single Transferable Vote. Background Ards and North Down is the only council in Northern Ireland on which Sinn Féin have never won a seat. Rachel Woods
Rachel Woods (born 15 April 1989) is a Northern Irish politician who served as the Green Party Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for North Down from 2019 to 2022, having replaced the party's former leader, Steven Agnew. Early life Woods is from Holywood, Co. Down. She holds a degree in history and a master's from Queen's University Belfast. From the age of 15, Woods worked in hospitality as a cleaner, chef and bar worker. She also worked as a researcher and economic analyst for Analyse Africa, part of the Financial Times, and as a supervisor in Holywood bar The Dirty Duck Ale House. Philip Smith (Northern Ireland Politician)
Philip Smith (born 7 November 1967) is an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Strangford from 2016 to 2017. Smith now works for Queen's University Belfast. He lost his seat in the 2017 Assembly election, being eliminated on the 9th count. In the 2019 local elections, Smith was elected to Ards and North Down Borough Council, representing the Comber district electoral area. Ards Peninsula (District Electoral Area)
The Ards Peninsula () is a peninsula in County Down, Northern Ireland, on the north-east coast of Ireland. It separates Strangford Lough from the North Channel of the Irish Sea. Towns and villages on the peninsula include Donaghadee, Millisle, Portavogie and Portaferry. The large towns of Newtownards and Bangor are at the mainland edge of the peninsula. Burr Point is the easternmost point on the island of Ireland. Approximately 30,000 people live on the peninsula (excluding the towns of Bangor and Newtownards). History In the Middle Ages, the Ards peninsula was inhabited by the Uí Echach Arda, a Gaelic Irish clan, and was part of the kingdom of Ulaid.
