2019 World Rowing Championships
The 2019 World Rowing Championships were held in Ottensheim, Austria from 25 August to 1 September 2019. Apart from Ottensheim, the right to host the championships was contested by Hamburg in Germany, Račice (Litoměřice District), Račice in the Czech Republic, and Varese in Italy. The event determined the majority of Rowing at the 2020 Summer Olympics – Qualification, qualifiers to the rowing competitions at the Rowing at the 2020 Summer Olympics, 2020 Summer Olympics and Rowing at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. On 21 August, three days before the championships, pararower Dzmitry Ryshkevich from Belarus died after he capsized during a training session. He was expected to participate in the 2019 World Rowing Championships – PR1 Men's single sculls, PR1M1x at his third consecutive championships. Ottensheim
Ottensheim is a municipality in the district of Urfahr-Umgebung in the Austrian state of Upper Austria. At its rowing venue, Regattastrecke Ottensheim, it has hosted numerous international rowing competitions, including various World Rowing Championships, World Championships, World Rowing U23 Championships, World U23 Championships, World Rowing Junior Championships, World Junior Championships, and World Rowing Cup, World Cups. History First settlements in this area date from about 4000 BC. The first mention of the settlement in a document dates from 1148 AD. In 1228 AD, Ottensheim received the market right – as third town in Upper Austria, after Linz (1210) and Enns (city), Enns (1212). In 1527, the Habsburg-Monarch Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand I endowed the town and the castle to his chancellor Niklas Rabenhaupt von Suche, who expanded the castle. Kjetil Borch
Kjetil Borch (born 14 February 1990) is a Norwegian rower. He is a two-time Olympic medallist and won the silver medal in the single sculls at the 2020 Summer Olympics and the bronze medal in the double sculls at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Borch is also a two-time world champion (2013, 2018) and a European champion (2018). He is a four-time Olympian and competed at the 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024 Olympic Games. Rowing career Borch began rowing in 2001, before taking a break to play handball and train kickboxing, and then later returned to rowing. He made his international debut for Norway in the quad scull at the World Junior Championships in Beijing in 2007 and later switched to the double scull with Bjørn Jostein Singstad for the 2008 World Junior Championships in Ottensheim. Koen Metsemakers, born , is a Dutch rower. He has won multiple World- and European championship gold medals and is a double Olympic gold medalist at both the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2024 Summer Olympics in the men's quadruple sculls (M4x). Tone Wieten (born 17 March 1994) is a Dutch representative rower. He is a European champion, a dual Olympian and an Olympic and world champion. His world championship title was won in the men's quad scull at the 2019 World Rowing Championships. He won a bronze medal in the Dutch eight at the 2015 World Rowing Championships. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro he was in the Dutch men's eight which won a bronze medal.
