2017 Tanjong Datu By-election
A by-election was held for the Sarawak State Assembly seat of Tanjong Datu on 18 February 2017 following the nomination day on 4 February 2017. The seat fell vacant following the death of its state assemblyman and Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem from cardiac arrest on January 11, 2017. Adenan, who was also president of the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (a Barisan Nasional component party), won the Tanjong Datu seat in 2016 state elections when he defeated Jazolkipli Numan of PKR by polling 6,360 votes against 468 by Jazolkipli. The Tanjong Datu by-election will see a three-way contest between Barisan Nasional candidate Jamilah Anu, State Reform Party candidate Johnny Aput and Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru candidate Rapelson Richard Hamit. Pehin Sri Tan Sri Haji Adenan bin Haji Satem ( ms, حاج عدنان بن حاج صتيم , label= Jawi, script=arab, italic=unset; 27 January 1944 – 11 January 2017), popularly known as Tok Nan, was a Malaysian politician who served as the fifth chief minister of Sarawak from March 2014 to his death in January 2017. Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB; en, United Bumiputera Heritage Party) is a right-wing political party in Malaysia. It is currently the largest political party in Sarawak. 2016 Sarawak State Election
The eleventh Sarawak state election was held on Saturday, 7 May 2016 after nomination for candidates on Monday, 25 April 2016. The 82 members of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, were elected in single-member constituencies using first-past-the-post voting. More than 1.1 million who had their names entered or retained in an electoral register for a particular electoral district in Sarawak was eligible to vote at the time of the election. Malaysia does not practice compulsory voting and automatic voter registration. The voting age is 21 although the age of majority in the country is 18. The Sarawak Native People's Party ( ms, Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru), legally known as Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (abbreviated PBDS) is a registered centre-right political party based in Sarawak, Malaysia. It was relatively new when its registration just approved by the Registrar of Society (RoS) on 28 August 2013. PBDS Baru was to contest 5 Dayak-majority seats in the 2016 Sarawak state election. PBDS Baru ahead of the 2018 general election had chosen the pig character as its mascot in which the animal has a deep meaning in the Dayak custom and symbolises the unity of the various Dayak tribes in Sarawak.
