The 2016 Erste Bank Open 500 was a men's tennis tournament played on indoor hard courts. It was the 42nd edition of the event, and part of the ATP World Tour 500 series, ATP World Tour 500 Series of the 2016 ATP World Tour. ATP World Tour 500 Series
The ATP 500 tournaments (previously known as the ''ATP World Tour 500'' tournaments, ''ATP International Series Gold'', and ''ATP Championship Series'') are the fourth highest tier of annual men's tennis tournament after the four Grand Slam (tennis), Grand Slam/major tournaments, ATP Finals, and the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, ATP 1000 events. As of 2025 ATP Tour, 2025, the series includes 16 tournaments, with 500 ranking points awarded for the events' singles champions – which accounts for the name of the series. Tournaments have various draws of 32 and 48 for singles and 16 and 24 for doubles. It is mandatory for leading players to enter at least four 500 events, including at least one after the US Open; if they play fewer than four, or fail to play in one after the US Open they get a "zero" score towards their world ranking for each one short. Ivo Karlović (; born 28 February 1979) is a Croatian former professional tennis player. His height of 211 cm (6 ft 11 in) makes him the joint-tallest ranked tennis player in history (along with Reilly Opelka). He won eight ATP Tour singles titles between 2007 and 2016. He was a serve-and-volleyer and officially held the record for the fastest serve recorded in professional tennis, measured at 251 km/h (156 mph), before being officially surpassed by John Isner in 2016. Kyle Steven Edmund (born 8 January 1995) is a British professional tennis player. He has a career-high singles ATP rankings, ranking of world No. 14 and was the top-ranked male British tennis player from March 2018 to October 2019. His career-best singles ATP ranking of World No. 23, achieved on 2 July 2018, makes him the highest-ranked tennis player from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
