2014 US Open (tennis)
The 2014 US Open was a tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts. It was the 134th edition of the US Open (tennis), US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam (tennis), Grand Slam event of the year. It took place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Rafael Nadal was the defending champion in the men's event; however, on August 18, the Spaniard announced his withdrawal from the event after failing to recover from a wrist injury, while Serena Williams was the two-time defending champion in the women's event. In the men's singles competition, Marin Čilić won his first grand slam, while Serena Williams won her Open Era, Open era record-tying sixth title in the women's singles competition, tying Chris Evert, and her eighteenth grand slam title, tying Evert and Martina Navratilova. Grand Slam (tennis)
The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year. In doubles, a Grand Slam may be achieved as a team or as an individual with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a "non-calendar-year Grand Slam", while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a "Career Grand Slam". Yui Kamiji
is a Japanese professional wheelchair tennis player. She has won 32 major titles, as well as a Paralympic silver and bronze medal in singles and doubles, respectively, at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. She would later win gold in both at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. She also won a bronze medal in singles at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Partnering Jordanne Whiley, Kamiji achieved the Grand Slam in doubles in 2014, and also won the Wheelchair Tennis Masters in doubles. Todd Woodbridge
Todd Andrew Woodbridge, OAM (born 2 April 1971) is an Australian broadcaster and former professional tennis player. During his playing career, he formed multiple Grand-Slam winning doubles partnerships with Mark Woodforde (nicknamed " The Woodies") and later Jonas Björkman. Christine Marie Evert (born December 21, 1954) is an American former professional tennis player. Open Era
The racket sport traditionally named lawn tennis, invented in Edgbaston, Warwickshire, England, now commonly known simply as tennis, is the direct descendant of what is now denoted real tennis or royal tennis, which continues to be played today as a separate sport with more complex rules. Hard Court
A hardcourt (or hard court) is a type of surface or floor on which a sport is played, most usually in reference to tennis courts. It is typically made of rigid materials such as Asphalt concrete, asphalt or concrete, and covered with acrylic resins to seal the surface and mark the playing lines, while providing some cushioning. Historically, hardwood surfaces were also in use in indoor settings, similar to an indoor basketball court, but these surfaces are rare now. David Wagner (born March 4, 1974) is an American wheelchair tennis player. Paralyzed from the mid-chest down and with thirty percent function in his hands, he competes in the quad division. He plays by taping the tennis racket to his hand. He is currently ranked number three in the world in singles and number two in doubles. Early life Wagner was born in Fullerton, California, and grew up in Walla Walla, Washington. He played basketball in high school and tennis in college. He became a quadriplegic at age 21 while visiting a friend in Redondo Beach, California, during summer break. Nicholas Taylor (born November 12, 1979) is an American wheelchair tennis player. Nick started playing tennis at the age of 14.
