2013 Quebec Liberal Party Leadership Election
The Quebec Liberal Party held a leadership convention in 2013 following Jean Charest's resignation after the party's 2012 election loss. The convention was held March 16–17, 2013, at the Verdun Auditorium in Montreal. The choice of venue was in part influenced by a lack of funds due to a recent drop in donations to the party. Philippe Couillard was elected on the first ballot. Procedure Candidates had until December 14, 2012 to be nominated by gathering the signatures of 500 party members from 50 ridings in 10 regions and submitting a $50,000 deposit. There was a $600,000 spending limit. Liberal riding associations in each of the province's 125 ridings were to select 24 delegates between February 4 and March 10, 2013. The party was unable to afford to pay delegates' travel expenses. Instead, the candidates themselves were allowed to reimburse the delegates. There were 5 debates, including one entirely in English. René Lévesque
René Lévesque (; August 24, 1922 – November 1, 1987) was a Québécois people, Québécois politician and journalist who served as the 23rd premier of Quebec from 1976 to 1985. He was the first Québécois political leader since Canadian Confederation, Confederation to attempt, through a referendum, to negotiate the political independence of Quebec. Nathalie Rochefort
Nathalie Rochefort is a Canadian politician, who represented the electoral district of Mercier in the National Assembly of Quebec from 2001 to 2003. A member of the Quebec Liberal Party, she was elected in a by-election on April 9, 2001, following the resignation of Robert Perreault. John Ciaccia
John Ciaccia (March 4, 1933 – August 7, 2018) was an Italian-born Canadian politician who was provincial cabinet minister from Montreal, Quebec. Ciaccia served as a member of the National Assembly of Quebec from 1973 to 1998, representing the Mount Royal riding for the Quebec Liberal Party. Lise Bacon
Lise Bacon (born August 25, 1934) is a former Canadian politician who served as Deputy Premier of Quebec from 1985 to 1994. A member of the Quebec Liberal Party, she served as a Member of the National Assembly of Quebec (MNA) for the riding of Bourassa from 1973 to 1976 and again for the riding of Chomedey from 1981 to 1994. Lise Thériault (born January 7, 1966) is a former Canadian politician. She is a former Member of the National Assembly of Quebec representing the riding of Anjou–Louis-Riel in Montreal. She was the Deputy Premier of Quebec and Minister for the Status of Women in the Couillard government. Guy Ouellette (born December 13, 1951) is a Quebec politician from Canada, police officer and author. He is the current Member of National Assembly of Quebec for the riding of Chomedey in Laval. Elected as the candidate of the Quebec Liberal Party, he was expelled from the party caucus in October 2018 for purportedly leaking classified information to the then-opposition Coalition Avenir Québec.
