2011–2012 Volvo Ocean Race
The 2011–12 Volvo Ocean Race was the 11th edition of the round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race, yacht race which started with an in-port race in Alicante, Spain on 29 October 2011 with six Volvo Open 70 yachts at the start line and ended with an in-port race in Galway, Ireland on 7 July 2012. The 39,270 NM route involved stopovers and in-port races in Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, Auckland, Itajaí, Miami, Lisbon, Lorient, and finally Galway. The race consisted of nine ocean races and ten in-port races. Participants Six teams started and finished the race. Of the teams only Team Sanya raced a second-hand boat, ''Telefónica Blue'', which had taken third place in the 2008-09 race. Volvo Open 70
The Volvo Open 70 (sometimes referred to as a Volvo Ocean 70) is the former class of racing yachts designed for the Volvo Ocean Race. It was first used in the 2005–06 race (replacing the Volvo Ocean 60 yachts which were first used in 1993). According to the VO70 rule, the yachts can be made from glass fibres, aramid fibres, or carbon fibres (which were not allowed for VO60s). It uses a canting keel which is capable of canting transversely up to an angle of 40 degrees. The Volvo Open 70 is not a singular yacht design or boat but rather a set of design rules to which competing boats must adhere. This is similar to the concept to the design and construction rules that define a racing car. Competing teams design and build boats within the scope of this rule to try and come up with the fastest boat for the expected conditions of the race. Chris Nicholson (sailor)
Christopher John "Chris" Nicholson (born 18 June 1969) is an Australian sailor who has competed in multiple Summer Olympics and Volvo Ocean Races and has won six World championships. Sailing career In 1992, Chris and his brother Darren won the 505 World Championships in Santa Cruz. The pair also won the 1994 World Championships in Durban and the 2002 World Championships in Fremantle. Nicholson then started competing in the 49er class with Daniel Phillips. Nicholson and Phillips won the 1997 Kiel Week event and then won the 1997 49er World Championships in Perth. Nicholson defended the title twice, winning the 1998 event in Bandol together before Nicholson won the 1999 event in Melbourne with Ed Smyth.
