2009 In Irish Television
The following is a list of events relating to television in Ireland from 2009. Events January *5 January – 3e launches, replacing Channel 6. *January – TV3 relaunches under the corporate name of The TV3 Group, although officially they remain TV3 Television Network Limited. The TV3 Group consists of TV3, 3e and tv3.i.e. February *9 February – The new look RTÉ News is unveiled on the One O'Clock News programme. March *No events April *21 April – It is announced that Lorraine Keane, the main presenter of '' Xposé'' will leave the series. TV3 subsequently launches a nationwide search for a new presenter. Emma Ledden
Emma Ledden (born 1977) is an Irish author, television presenter, model and writer. She began her television career on Raidió Teilifís Éireann's children's strand ''The Den'', before joining MTV Europe as its first Irish presenter. Born in Cork, Ireland, Ledden is a former presenter of the BBC One Saturday-morning children's television programme ''Live & Kicking'', which she left in 2000. She has also presented ''The Dancefloor Chart Show, MTV News, Select'' and ''Weekend Edition'' on MTV Europe. Ledden currently runs her own communications company, Presenting to Sell. She works for LinkedIn as a Learning and Communications Consultant. In 2009, she was the main judge for the TV3 series '' Total Xposure''. In 2013, she published her first book, ''The Presentation Book: How to Create It, Shape It and Deliver It''. Play TV (Ireland)
''Play TV'' is an Irish late-night/early-morning phone-in quiz show produced by Telemedia InteracTV and broadcast by TV3 from May 2009 to March 2010. The show was broadcast live every night of the week, Monday to Sunday, from 12:00am to 3:00am from InteracTV's headquarters in Budapest, Hungary. The program was very controversial, with numerous complaints against it made to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. TV3, however, justified it by saying that they got money from ''PlayTV,'' which saved jobs from being lost during the recession. Two years after TV3 removed ''Play TV'' from its schedules, it began to air '' Psychic Readings Live'' in the same slot. Newspaper reports compared the controversy generated by ''Psychic Readings Live'' to ''Play TV'', with one saying "it will remind TV3 of a past life". Broadcasting Authority Of Ireland
The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI; ) is a former broadcasting authority which regulated both public and commercial broadcasting sector in Ireland. It was established in 2009, effectively replacing the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) (). It was dissolved in 2023 and its staff and functions were transferred to a new body entitled . History *The Authority came into being under the Broadcasting Act 2009. *The Independent Radio and Television Commission (IRTC) was established under the terms of the Radio and Television Act 1988. This act allowed the first legal stations not operated by RTÉ, the national broadcaster, to come into existence. Prior to this commercial broadcasting in Ireland had been unlicensed and illegal. The Angelus (television Programme)
''The Angelus'' is an Irish radio and television religious programme, first broadcast in 1950, of the sound of an Angelus bell ringing for one minute. On radio it is broadcast at 12midday and 6pm every day. On television, it is only broadcast at 6pm, immediately before the main evening news. Since 2009, the programme on television no longer includes Catholic imagery and the Angelus prayer itself is never broadcast. The bells were recorded at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, although initially broadcast live. Radio Éireann first broadcast ''The Angelus'' on 15 August 1950. The Secretary of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, Leon Ó Broin, and the Archbishop of Dublin, John Charles McQuaid, had discussed the original idea in the late 1940s. RTÉ Television
RTÉ Television is a department of Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), Ireland's public service broadcaster. Its first channel was Telefís Éireann, which began broadcasting on 31 December 1961. Since the 1960s, RTÉ Television has added channels and digital television service. Brian Cowen
Brian Bernard Cowen (born 10 January 1960) is an Irish former politician who served as Taoiseach and Leader of Fianna Fáil from 2008 to 2011. Cowen served as a TD for the constituency of Laois–Offaly from 1984 to 2011 and served in several ministerial roles between 1992 and 2011, including as Minister for Finance from 2004 to 2008 and Tánaiste from 2007 to 2008. Cowen was elected leader of Fianna Fáil in May 2008, upon the resignation of Bertie Ahern, and was nominated by Dáil Éireann to replace him as Taoiseach. Weeks after taking office, his administration faced the Irish financial and banking crises. The Late Late Show (season 49)
The 49th season of '' The Late Late Show'', the world's longest-running chat show, began on 3 September 2010 and concluded on 27 May 2011. Ryan Tubridy's second season as host, it aired on RTÉ One each Friday evening from 21:30. Viewing figures hit a 12-year high during this season. The first guest of the season was former British prime minister Tony Blair. The live interview occurred the night before a book signing at Eason's which attracted international attention when Blair was pelted with shoes and eggs and successfully evaded an attempted citizen's arrest on charges of war crimes. Ryan Tubridy
Ryan Tubridy (born 28 May 1973) is an Irish broadcaster. He currently presents the weekday mid-morning programme ''The Ryan Tubridy Show'' on Virgin Radio UK, as well as a weekend programme on Sundays. His broadcasting career with RTÉ spanned over two decades, where he presented many shows on radio and television, most notably ''The Late Late Show (Irish talk show), The Late Late Show'' on RTÉ One from 2009 to 2023. Other shows he presented include RTÉ 2fm's ''The Full Irish'' (2004–2009) and ''Tubridy (radio show), Tubridy'' (2010–2015), RTÉ One's ''Tubridy Tonight'' (2004–2009), RTÉ Radio One's ''The Tubridy Show'' (2005–2010) and ''The Ryan Tubridy Show'' (2015–2023). Evening Herald
''The Herald'' is a nationwide mid-market tabloid newspaper headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, and published by Independent News & Media who are a subsidiary of Mediahuis. It is published Monday–Saturday. The newspaper was known as the ''Evening Herald'' until its name was changed in 2013. It is known for its vendors on the streets of Dublin. History The ''Evening Herald'' was first published in Dublin on 19 December 1891. In 1982 the paper changed its size from broadsheet to tabloid. Until November 2000, the ''Evening Herald'' was produced and pressed in Independent House on Middle Abbey Street, Dublin 1. The monochrome printing facility in the basement of this building was then retired, and the paper is now printed in full colour at a purpose-built plant in Citywest, along with the ''Irish Independent'', the '' Sunday Independent'' and various other regional newspapers owned by Independent News & Media. Seán Munsanje
Seán Munsanje (born 10 July 1981) is an Irish television presenter from Dublin. He has presented shows for several channels in his native country, including Raidió Teilifís Éireann, Channel 6 and, most recently, TV3. On 11 August 2009, he won the TV3 reality television programme, '' Total Xposure'', thus becoming the new presenter of the channel's prime time entertainment magazine programme '' Xposé''. A public vote saw him beat Simon Atkins and Ruth O'Neill in the final on 11 August 2009. Munsanje thus became the first ever male presenter of ''Xposé ''. He also was manager of temporary radio station for LGBT community, Pride Vibes in 2023 and 2024. Career Education and early career Munsanje was born in Dublin to an Irish mother and Zambian father.
