The 2008 Rugby Canada Super League season was the eleventh and final season for the RCSL. Rugby Canada Super League
The Rugby Canada Super League (RCSL or Super League) was a national, semi-professional rugby union competition in Canada. The league represented the second level of domestic rugby union in Canada, and the highest level wholly indigenous to Canada. In terms of seniority it rested immediately beneath the IRB sponsored North America 4, a former US/Canadian cross-border competition in which two Canadian teams (Canada East and Canada West) took part. Most players took part in RCSL ("Super League") on an amateur basis. In early 2009, after 11 seasons of play, Rugby Canada decided to disband the RCSL in the wake of the establishment of the Americas Rugby Championship, the successor to the North America 4. The RCSL was replaced by the Canadian Rugby Championship and the Rugby Canada National Junior Championship, which absorbed the majority of the RCSL teams. Calgary Mavericks
The Calgary Mavericks are a Canadian rugby union team based in Calgary, Alberta. The team plays in the Rugby Canada National Junior Championship and draws most of its players from the Calgary Rugby Union, one of fourteen Rugby Unions that have rep teams in the RCSL. The Mavericks play their "home" games at Calgary Rugby Park in Calgary. Saskatchewan Prairie Fire
The Prairie Fire was a Canadian rugby union team based in Regina, Saskatchewan. The team played in the Rugby Canada Super League and the Rugby Canada National Junior Championship, which followed once the former was disbanded. The Fire drew most of their players from the Saskatchewan Rugby Union, one of fourteen Rugby Unions that had representative teams in the RCSL. The Prairie Fire played their home games at Regina Rugby Park in Regina. The Prairie Fire were Western Champions for the 2005 and 2006 seasons, but both times came up short in the Super League Final versus the Newfoundland Rock, once in Regina and once in St. Johns, Newfoundland, at Swilers Rugby Park. They won the MacTier Cup at Regina Rugby Park in 2007 defeating the Niagara Thunder, 28–12. Vancouver Wave
The Vancouver Wave are a Canadian rugby union team based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The team plays in the Rugby Canada National Junior Championship and draws most of its players from the Vancouver Rugby Union and the British Columbia Rugby Union, one of fourteen Rugby Unions that have rep teams in the RCSL. The Wave play their "home" games at the Brockton Oval at Stanley Park in Vancouver. The team played under the name ''BC Wave'' for the 2006 and 2007 RCSL seasons, but later switched back to using Vancouver Wave. On August 1, 2009, the team won their first national championship. When they defeated the Toronto Rebellion 41–21. On November 13, 2021, the Wave became the first Coastal Cup champions. Newfoundland Rock
The Newfoundland Rock are a Canadian rugby union team based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The team plays in the Rugby Canada National Junior Championship (RCNJC) and draws most of its players from the Newfoundland Rugby Union, one of fourteen Rugby Unions that have representative teams in the RCNJC. The organization was originally a competitor at the senior men's level. However, with a 2009 restructuring of Canada's rugby competitions, their place has been taken by a successor organization, the Atlantic Rock, a regional team in the Americas Rugby Championship. Niagara Thunder
The Niagara Lightning (formerly Niagara Thunder) are Canadian rugby union team based in southern Ontario. The team played in the Rugby Canada National Junior Championship and draws most of its players from the Niagara Rugby Union. The Lightning play their "home" games in Hamilton ( Mohawk Sports Park) and nearby Burlington, Oakville ( Crusader Park), and Brantford. History In 1998, Rugby Canada and the provincial unions agreed to form the Rugby Canada Super League. Fourteen unions and sub-unions were invited to compete in the new semi-professional league. Nova Scotia Keltics
The Nova Scotia Keltics were a rugby team in Halifax, Nova Scotia that competed in the Rugby Canada Super League. They played their home games alternatively at the Wanderers Grounds and Graves-Oakley Memorial Park. History The club was one of the founding members of the Rugby Canada Super League in 1998. The Keltics played in the MacTier Cup final in 1998 (as the Nova Scotia Keiths) and in 2000, losing on both occasions. Defence Minister Peter MacKay made his return at inside centre for the Keltics on May 19, 2008 in a 49–5 away loss to the Niagara Thunder.
