2006 Tour Down Under
The 2006 Tour Down Under was held from 18 to 22 January 2006 in and around Adelaide, South Australia. It was a multiple stage road cycling race that took part over five stages with a total of 685 kilometres and is part of the 2005–06 UCI Oceania Tour. The 2006 Down Under Classic was the official warm-up race for the event. The event was awarded the Australian Sport Tourism Award of the year at the Australian Sport Awards in February 2006, having attracted 495,000 spectators and more than 11,670 visitors to South Australia. Simon Gerrans (born 16 May 1980) is an Australian former professional road bicycle racer, who rode professionally between 2005 and 2018, for the , , , , and squads. Post-retirement he initially worked as an athlete intern at Goldman Sachs in London, then joineThe Service Course in which he is an investor, as COO and now CEO, in early 2020. He can also be heard commentating road cycling for ASO and SBS. Gerrans was a two-time winner of the Australian National Road Race Championships, having won the title in 2012, and 2014. Angaston, South Australia
Angaston is a town on the eastern side of the Barossa Valley in South Australia, 77 km northeast of Adelaide. Its elevation is 347 m, one of the highest points in the valley, and has an average rainfall of 561 mm. Angaston was originally known as ''German Pass'', but was later renamed after the politician, banker and pastoralist George Fife Angas, who settled in the area in the 1850s. Angaston is in the Barossa Council local government area, the state electoral district of Schubert and the federal Division of Barker. Railway Angaston was the terminus of the Barossa Valley railway line which was built in 1911. Samuel Dumoulin (born 20 August 1980) is a French former professional road bicycle racer, who rode professionally between 2002 and 2019 for the , and teams. He now works as a directeur sportif for UCI ProTeam . Career Dumoulin rode as an amateur for the TCCT (Tonic cyclo club of Ternay). He won the national youth championship in 1996, then the ''espoir'' (young professional) Paris–Tours and Paris-Auxerre in 2001. Willunga is a town located to the south of Adelaide, South Australia in the City of Onkaparinga Local government in Australia, local government area, 47 km from the Adelaide city centre. Carlos Barredo Llamazales (born 5 June 1981, in Oviedo, Asturias) is a Spanish former road racing cyclist, who competed as a professional between 2004 and 2012. He was issued a suspension for the first two months of the 2011 season in response to a fight with Rui Costa after a 2010 Tour de France stage, with Barredo claiming that Costa had ridden dangerously in the final stages of the race, but later apologising for his actions. Doping Barredo was suspended by on 18 October 2012 after the UCI opened proceedings for apparent violations of the Anti-Doping Rules on the basis of the information provided by the blood profile in his biological passport. Yankalilla, South Australia
Yankalilla is an agriculturally based town situated on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia, located 72 km south of the state's capital of Adelaide. The town is nestled in the Bungala River valley, overlooked by the southern Mount Lofty Ranges and acts as a service centre for the surrounding agricultural district. In the early stages of the colonisation of the state, Yankalilla was a highly important location, but its close proximity to Adelaide and the advent of fast transport has greatly diminished this position.
