1999 New Year Honours (New Zealand)
The 1999 New Year Honours in New Zealand were appointments by Elizabeth II in her right as Queen of New Zealand, on the advice of the New Zealand government, to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by New Zealanders, and to celebrate the passing of 1998 and the beginning of 1999. Elizabeth II
Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; 21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime, and was head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Christchurch
Christchurch ( ; mi, Ōtautahi) is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Canterbury Region. Royal New Zealand Air Force
The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) ( mi, Te Tauaarangi o Aotearoa, "The Warriors of the Sky of New Zealand"; previously ', "War Party of the Blue") is the aerial service branch of the New Zealand Defence Force. It was formed from New Zealand elements of the British Royal Air Force, becoming an independent force in 1923, although many RNZAF aircrew continued to serve in the Royal Air Force until the end of the 1940s. The RNZAF fought in World War II, Malaya, Korean War, Vietnam and the Gulf War as well as undertaking various United Nations peacekeeping missions. From a 1945 peak of over 1,000 combat aircraft the RNZAF has shrunk to a strength of around 48 aircraft in 2022, focusing on maritime patrol and transport duties in support of the Royal New Zealand Navy and the New Zealand Army. Carey Adamson
Air Marshal Carey William Adamson, (5 September 1942 – 10 May 2019) was a senior officer of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Adamson grew up in Fairlie before attending Timaru Boys' High School, where he was a boarder apart from his final year, when he commuted daily on his motorcycle. As a teenager, Adamson joined the Air Training Corps. He then joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1961, where he served as a pilot flying Austers and Harvards. In 1964 Adamson was assigned to the United States to train on the C130 Hercules. He was Chief of the Air Staff from 1995 to 1999 and Chief of Defence Force from 1999 to 2001. In 2002, he caused "unprecedented controversy" when he criticised the government for disestablishing the air combat force. Waikanae
Waikanae (, ) is a town on the Kapiti Coast, 60 kilometres north of the Wellington CBD. The name is a Māori word meaning "waters" (''wai'') "of the grey mullet". The town lies between Paraparaumu, eight kilometres to the southwest, and Ōtaki, 15 kilometres to the northeast. It contains Waikanae railway station, the northernmost station to which the Metlink trains from Bunny Street station in Central Wellington go. Geoff Thompson (politician)
Geoffrey William Fleetwood Thompson (born 11 June 1940) is a former New Zealand politician of the National Party. Early life Thompson was born in Wellington on 11 June 1940. He received his education at Waterloo and Silverstream primary schools, Hutt Valley High School, Horowhenua College and Wellington College. He attended Victoria University of Wellington and graduated LL.M. in 1966. Member of parliament Thompson represented the Horowhenua electorate in the New Zealand House of Representatives from 1978 to 1984. He was a parliamentary under-secretary between 1981 and 1984. After parliament Thompson was awarded the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal for services to New Zealand. He was a lawyer on the Kapiti Coast. Pauline Kingi
Pauline Kumeroa Kingi (born 3 May 1951 in Napier, New Zealand) is a Māori community leader. Biography Pauline Kingi received an LL.M. from Harvard and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 1980 and is also a corporate director, with membership of both the Institute of Directors and the New Zealand Institute of Management. Her extensive community and public sector involvement has spanned over 28 years. She is a past chancellor of the Auckland University of Technology and lodged the application for AIT to become the first University of Technology in New Zealand, and is credited as being a key contributor in the making of AUT. Inland Revenue or Inland Revenue Department (IRD; mi, Te Tari Taake) is the public service department of New Zealand charged with advising the government on tax policy, collecting and disbursing payments for social support programmes, and collecting tax. Upper Hutt ( mi, Te Awa Kairangi ki Uta) is a city in the Wellington Region of New Zealand and one of the four cities that constitute the Wellington metropolitan area. Bill Gallagher (businessman)
Sir William Murray Gallagher (born 22 January 1941) is a New Zealand businessman. Biography Gallagher was born on 22 January 1941, the son of Bill Gallagher and Millie Gallagher (née Murray). His father was an inventor, engineer and businessman who is best remembered for popularising the electric fence; he founded Gallagher Engineering Limited in Hamilton in 1963. The younger Bill Gallagher and his brother John took increasing roles in the business and marketing side of the family firm through the 1960s, with Bill leading the company's export push into Australia and becoming the chief executive in the mid-1970s. Marti Friedlander
Martha Friedlander (; 19 February 1928 – 14 November 2016) was a British-New Zealand photographer. She emigrated to New Zealand in 1958, where she was known for photographing and documenting New Zealand's people, places and events, and was considered one of the country's best photographers. Early life Friedlander was born on 19 February 1928 in the East End of London to Jewish immigrants from Kyiv, Ukraine. Sir Robert Bartlett Elliott (3 January 1934 – 21 August 2020) was a New Zealand medical researcher. Born in Adelaide, South Australia, on 3 January 1934, Elliott was educated at Adelaide High School, and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide from 1951 to 1956. After working as a house surgeon in Blenheim, New Zealand, he trained in paediatric medicine in Adelaide and Denver, Colorado. He was appointed as a senior lecturer at Adelaide in 1963, and in 1970 he moved to the University of Auckland School of Medicine as the foundation professor of paediatrics.
