1998 Memorial Cup
The 1998 Memorial Cup (branded as the 1998 Chrysler Memorial Cup for sponsorship reasons) occurred May 9–17 at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane, Washington. It was the 80th annual Memorial Cup competition and determined the major junior ice hockey champion of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Participating teams were the host Spokane Chiefs and the winners of the Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League which were the Guelph Storm, Val-d'Or Foreurs and Portland Winter Hawks. The Winter Hawks won their second Memorial Cup defeating the Storm from a goal in overtime by Bobby Russell. , only Portland (twice) and Spokane (twice) have taken the Cup to the US. The tournament set a new Memorial Cup attendance record. However, that record was broken the following year in Ottawa. Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena
Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena (Spokane Arena) is a multi-purpose arena in the northwestern United States, located in Spokane, Washington. Opened in 1995, it is home to the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League. Facility Construction With an aging Spokane Coliseum, along with a need for a larger facility more than twice the coliseum's capacity, the Spokane City Council and Board of Spokane County Commissioners formed the Spokane Public Facilities District (SPFD) to acquire, construct, own and operate sports and entertainment facilities with contiguous parking facilities. Justin Morneau
Justin Ernest George Morneau (born May 15, 1981) is a Canadian former professional baseball first baseman. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Minnesota Twins, Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies, and Chicago White Sox. At and , Morneau was drafted as a catcher by the Twins in 1999. He converted to first base in the minor leagues and made his MLB debut in 2003. Morneau held that position throughout his career and in 2007 became the first Twin since Gary Gaetti in 1987–1988 to hit 30 home runs in consecutive seasons. In ice hockey, the captain is the player designated by a team as the only person authorized to speak with the game officials regarding rule interpretations when the captain is on the ice. At most levels of play each team must designate one captain and a number of alternate captains (usually two or three) who speak to the officials when the captain is on the bench. Captains wear a "C" on their sweaters, while alternate captains wear an "A". Officially captains have no other responsibility or authority, although they may, depending on the league or individual team, have various informal duties, such as participation in pre-game ceremonies or other events outside the game. Joey Tetarenko
Joey Tetarenko (born March 3, 1978) is a Canadian Métis former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). Playing career Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and growing up in St. Louis, Saskatchewan, Tetarenko was drafted by the Florida Panthers 82nd overall in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He played for Portland Winter Hawks while in high school. He made his National Hockey League debut for the Panthers during the 2000–01 NHL season and went on to play 69 games over three seasons before he was traded to the Ottawa Senators for Simon Lajeunesse. After appearing in only two games with Ottawa in 2003 he signed with the Carolina Hurricanes, spending much of his tenure with their American Hockey League affiliate the Lowell Lock Monsters. Andrew Ference
Andrew James Stewart Ference (born March 17, 1979) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenseman. Ference played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and the Edmonton Oilers. In 2011, Ference helped the Bruins to their sixth Stanley Cup championship. Ference was born in Edmonton, Alberta, but grew up in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Playing career WHL and Pittsburgh Penguins Ference began his hockey career in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Portland Winterhawks. Matt Walker (born April 7, 1980) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). During his nine NHL seasons he played for the St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Philadelphia Flyers. He is the younger brother of former WHL player Darby Walker and cousin of former AHL goaltender Mike Walker, and Olympic bronze medallist curler Geoff Walker.
