1992 Open Championship
The 1992 Open Championship was a men's major golf championship and the 121st Open Championship, held from 16–19 July at Muirfield Golf Links in Gullane, Scotland. Nick Faldo won his third Open Championship and fifth major title by one stroke over runner-up John Cook. It was Faldo's second win at Muirfield, where he won his first Claret Jug in 1987. Daren Lee of England was the only amateur to make the cut; he earned the silver medal as low amateur and finished in a tie for 68th place. Gullane
Gullane ( or ) is a town on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth in East Lothian on the east coast of Scotland. There has been a church in the village since the ninth century. The ruins of the Old Church of St. Andrew built in the twelfth century can still be seen at the western entrance to the village; the church was abandoned after a series of sandstorms made it unusable, and Dirleton Parish Church took its place. Gullane Bents, the village's award-winning beach, is backed by large sand dunes that in recent years have become rather overgrown by invasive shrubs like sea-buckthorn. Gullane is part of the John Muir Way, a long-distance footpath along the coast between Musselburgh and Dunglass. The local population includes a higher than average percentage of elderly people, but also attracts young families and commuters for Edinburgh. Daren Lee
Daren Lee (born 10 January 1965) is an English professional golfer. Lee was born in London. He won the silver medal as the leading amateur in The Open Championship at Muirfield in 1992. He turned professional later that year and played on the European Tour and its second tier Challenge Tour between 1993 and 2003. His best finish on the European Tour Order of Merit was 45th in 2001, the only year he made the top 100. Strangely for a professional golfer, Lee never played a practice round prior to a tournament, instead preferring to simply walk the course. 1989 Open Championship
The 1989 Open Championship was a men's major golf championship and the 118th Open Championship, held from 20–23 July at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Troon, Scotland. Mark Calcavecchia won his only major championship in a playoff over Greg Norman and Wayne Grady. It was the first playoff at the Open in fourteen years and the first use off the four-hole aggregate playoff, adopted in 1985. The playoff was formerly 18 holes the following day (and 36 holes prior to 1964). Calcavecchia was the first American champion at The Open in six years. Norman shot a course record 64 (−8) in the final round to get into the playoff. Mark Calcavecchia
Mark John Calcavecchia (born June 12, 1960) is an American professional golfer and a former PGA Tour member. During his professional career, he won 13 PGA Tour events, including the 1989 Open Championship. He plays on the Champions Tour as well as a limited PGA Tour schedule that includes The Open Championship. Early years Calcavecchia was born in Laurel, Nebraska. While he was a teenager, his family moved from Nebraska to West Palm Beach, Florida in 1973. He attended North Shore High School in West Palm Beach, and won the Florida high school golf championship in 1977 while playing for the North Shore golf team. Ian Baker-Finch
Ian Michael Baker-Finch (born 24 October 1960) is an Australian professional golfer and sports commentator, who is best known for winning The Open Championship in 1991. Early years Baker-Finch was born in Nambour, Queensland, Australia. He grew up in the same Queensland "neighbourhood" as fellow professional golfers Greg Norman and Wayne Grady. Professional golf career Baker-Finch turned professional in 1979. He credits Jack Nicklaus as his greatest influence, saying that he based his game on Nicklaus' book, ''Golf My Way''. 1986 Open Championship
The 1986 Open Championship was a men's major golf championship and the 115th Open Championship, held from 17 to 20 July at Turnberry Golf Resort, Scotland. Aided by a 63 in the second round, Greg Norman won his first major championship at even-par, five strokes ahead of runner-up Gordon J. Brand. It was the second Open at Turnberry, the first was in 1977, the famous "Duel in the Sun" between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. The winning score that year was a record-breaking 268 (–12), twelve strokes lower than Norman's even-par 280 in 1986. Introduced in 1968, the second cut (at 54 holes) was discontinued after 1985. Also changed in 1986 was the playoff format, to a four-hole aggregate immediately following the final round, rather than 18 holes the following day (and 36 holes prior to 1964). Greg Norman
Gregory John Norman AO (born 10 February 1955) is an Australian entrepreneur and retired professional golfer who spent 331 weeks as world number one in the 1980s and 1990s. The 1985 Open Championship was a men's major golf championship and the 114th Open Championship, held from 18 to 21 July at Royal St George's Golf Club in Sandwich, England. Sandy Lyle won his only Open Championship, one stroke ahead of runner-up Payne Stewart. It was the first of his two major titles; Lyle added a green jacket as Masters champion in 1988. Sandy Lyle
Alexander Walter Barr Lyle (born 9 February 1958) is a Scottish professional golfer. Lyle has won two major championships during his career. Along with Nick Faldo and Ian Woosnam, he became one of Britain's top golfers during the 1980s. He spent 167 weeks in the top-10 of the Official World Golf Ranking from its introduction, in 1986, until 1989. Lyle was inducted to the World Golf Hall of Fame in May 2012. 1959 Open Championship
The 1959 Open Championship was the 88th Open Championship, held 1–3 July at Muirfield Golf Links in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. Gary Player, age 23, shot a final round of 68 to win the first of his nine major titles, two strokes ahead of runners-up Fred Bullock and Flory Van Donck. It was the first of Player's three Claret Jugs; he won again in 1968 and 1974. Muirfield was originally scheduled to host in 1957, but it was transferred to St. Andrews because of petrol rationing following the "Suez Crisis" in late 1956. Muirfield was subsequently allocated the 1959 Championship. Qualifying took place on 29–30 June, with 18 holes at Muirfield and 18 holes at the number 1 course of Gullane Golf Club. 1966 Open Championship
The 1966 Open Championship was the 95th Open Championship, held 6–9 July at Muirfield Golf Links in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. Jack Nicklaus won the first of his three Claret Jugs, one stroke ahead of runners-up Doug Sanders and Dave Thomas. It was the sixth of eighteen major titles for Nicklaus and marked the completion of the first of his three career grand slams. This was the first Open to be scheduled over four days, with one round each day, finishing on Saturday. Previous editions had played the third and fourth rounds on Friday. The U.S. Open changed to a four-day schedule the previous year in 1965, moving its final round from Saturday afternoon to Sunday.
