Southern Cross Hotel
The Southern Cross Hotel was a hotel in Melbourne, Australia. It was opened by the Prime Minister, Robert Menzies, on 24 August 1962 as Australia's first modern 'International' hotel, heralding the arrival of American-style glamour, the jet-set and international tourism. It occupied a large site on Bourke Street in central Melbourne, formerly occupied by the grand Eastern Market, and was the premier hotel in the city into the early 1980s. The Southern Cross was the preferred hotel for celebrities in this period, most famously The Beatles in 1964, and the ballroom was the preferred location for locally and nationally important events. Graham Wright
Graham Wright (born 6 June 1968) is a former Australian rules footballer, who played for in the Australian Football League. Playing career Wright was selected by Collingwood in the 1987 National draft with their first round pick (no.3 overall) as a quick wingman, having shown great courage for Tasmanian side East Devonport. Making his debut in 1988, Wright took his time to prove his value as a first-round draftee but in 1990 he had a fantastic year which saw him rise in ranking amongst the top wingmen in the league. Wright finished 2nd in the Brownlow Medal to Tony Liberatore by one vote in 1990, and would then finish equal 3rd in the Copeland Trophy. Bill Brownless
Anthony William Brownless (born 28 January 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer and radio and television media personality who represented in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1980s and 1990s. Early life Brownless was born and raised in Jerilderie, a rural town in New South Wales. He first played football for his local team, the Jerilderie Football Club, when it was part of the Murray Football League. He boarded for three years in Kilmore, Victoria, at Assumption College, one of Australia's most renowned "football nurseries", a school which has a strong tradition of producing footballers who have gone on to play in the AFL. Brett Stephens
Brett Alexander "Moose" Stephens (born 20 February 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian and Australian Football Leagues (VFL and AFL) and currently a performance coach for world class athletes, working with pro tennis players, golfers and surfers. Football career Stephens was a key position player originally from Croydon, Victoria, and had stints at VFL clubs Essendon and Sydney, Tasmanian Football League (TFL) club North Hobart, and Western Australian Football League's East Perth Football Club before his recruitment by Fitzroy. Ross Lyon
Ross Lyon (born 8 November 1966) is a former Australian rules football player and the senior coach of the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He previously coached St Kilda from 2007 to 2011 and the Fremantle Football Club from 2012 to 2019. He played for Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears from 1985 to 1995. Playing career Fitzroy Lyon began his career with Fitzroy in 1985. After playing the last five games of the season and the first game in 1986 he missed the remainder of the season and most of 1987 due to groin and back injuries that was later diagnosed as spondylolisthesis. Darren Bewick (born 21 August 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who won two premierships with the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Bewick's game breaking pace & goal sense inside the attacking 50 was legendary amongst Bomber fans. After debuting in 1988, Bewick played in all three of Essendon's finals in 1989. Anthony Shaw (born 23 July 1960) is a former Australian rules footballer, coach and media personality who played for the Collingwood Football Club. Playing career Collingwood Football Club Shaw was recruited to Collingwood from Reservoir-Lakeside to make his debut in 1977 alongside brother Ray. He was a small midfielder at 170 cm who didn't have the natural ability or quality skills of others but his courage and determination made him a fine rover. Anthony McGuinness (born 6 May 1964 in Adelaide, South Australia) is a former Australian rules football player who played for Footscray and in the VFL/AFL. His wife is former '' Nine News'' Adelaide presenter Georgina McGuinness. Brett Lovett
Brett Lovett (born 20 May 1966) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He also represented Victoria on six occasions. Recruited from Inverloch, Lovett played at half back for the Demons from 1986 until 1997. After retiring, he went on to coach Frankston in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 2003 to 2008. Lovett was appointed coach of Sandringham, also a VFL side, in October 2010. David Bain
On 20 June 1994, Robin and Margaret Bain and three of their four childrenArawa, Laniet and Stephenwere shot to death in Dunedin, New Zealand. The only suspects were David Cullen Bain, the eldest son and only survivor, and Robin Bain, the father. David Bain, aged 22, was charged with five counts of murder. In May 1995, he was convicted on each of the five counts and sentenced to mandatory life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of sixteen years. Bain's case was taken up by businessman and former rugby player Joe Karam. Andrew Collins (born 25 April 1965) is an Australian rules football coach and former player who is currently the head of development coach for the Hawthorn Football Club. He played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League, Victorian/Australian Football League. Collins was a rugged back pocket defender.
