1989–90 DDR-Oberliga
The 1989–90 DDR-Oberliga was the 41st season of the DDR-Oberliga, the first tier of league football in East Germany. It was the last season of the league under the name of DDR-Oberliga as it played as the NOFV-Oberliga in the following season. East Germany saw great political change during the 1989–90 season with the opening of borders in October 1989, free elections in March 1990 and the eventual German reunification later in the year. The league was contested by fourteen teams. Dynamo Dresden won the championship, the club's last out of eight East German championships. Torsten Gütschow of Dynamo Dresden was the league's top scorer with 18 goals, while Ulf Kirsten, also of Dynamo Dresden, took out the seasons East German Footballer of the year award. Andreas Thom
Andreas Thom (born 7 September 1965) is a German former professional footballer who played as a forward for BFC Dynamo, Bayer Leverkusen, Celtic and Hertha BSC. He played 51 times for East Germany throughout the 1980s and played ten times for the unified Germany national team in the early 1990s. He is now retired from playing and works as a youth coach at Hertha BSC. Club career Andreas Thom was born in Rüdersdorf in East Germany and began playing football at an early age for TSG Herzfelde. Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl
Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl was a German association football club based in Eisenhüttenstadt in Brandenburg. The club dissolved in 2016 and merged into FC Eisenhüttenstadt. FC Eisenhüttenstadt plays in the sixth tier Brandenburg-Liga as of the 2021–22 season. History The predecessor of Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl was founded as enterprise sports community BSG Stahl Fürstenberg Ost in Fürtstenberg in Bezirk Frankfurt in 1950. The football team was admitted to the new third tier Bezirksliga Frankfurt an der Oder in 1952. The community of Stalinstadt was built nearby for the workers of the local ironworks, and so the team was known as BSG Stahl Stalinstadt from 1953. The DDR-Liga (English: GDR League or ''East German League'') was, prior to German reunification in 1990, the second level of football competition in the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik or German Democratic Republic, commonly East Germany), being roughly equivalent to the 2. Bundesliga in West Germany.
