1988 America's Cup
The 1988 America's Cup was the 27th America's Cup regatta, and was contested between the defender, San Diego Yacht Club represented by ''Stars & Stripes H3'', and the challenger, the Mercury Bay Boating Club represented by New Zealand Challenge's ''KZ-1''. Run under strict Deed of Gift rules, the regatta was won by the San Diego Yacht club, in a two-race sweep. Challenge and response The 1988 America's Cup was the first hostile Deed of Gift challenge. Dennis Conner had won the America's Cup for the San Diego Yacht Club on 4 February 1987 at the 1987 America's Cup. In July, New Zealand banker Michael Fay went to the San Diego Yacht Club and issued a Notice of Challenge from the Mercury Bay Boating Club of New Zealand, which was based on a strict reading of the Deed of Gift. San Diego Yacht Club
San Diego Yacht Club is a yacht club located in San Diego Bay. It is located in Point Loma across from a spit of land known as Shelter Island. Facilities The San Diego Yacht Club facility has a main dining room and outdoor deck seating, a bar, banquet space, a sailing center, a library, a swimming pool, saunas, hot tub, gym, tennis courts, and a pavilion equipped with a barbecue. There are wet and dry slips for member use for a monthly fee. The wet slips can accommodate boats up to 90 feet in length, and the dry slips are for smaller boats up to 23 feet in length. SDYC leases an outstation on Catalina Island from the Catalina Island Conservancy. The outstation is named Buffalo Beach and is located at the White's landing, Long Point area. Andrew Taylor (sailor)
Andrew Taylor (born 22 July 1963) is a New Zealand sailor who has competed in multiple Whitbread Round the World Races and America's Cups. Taylor sailed the 1985–86 Whitbread Round the World Race on '' Lion New Zealand'' before joining New Zealand Challenge. He sailed on ''KZ 7'' at the 1987 Louis Vuitton Cup and on '' KZ 1'' during the 1988 America's Cup. Taylor then sailed in the 1989–90 Whitbread Round the World Race on '' Fisher & Paykel NZ''. He re-joined New Zealand Challenge for the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup. Warwick Fleury
Warwick David Fleury is a New Zealand sailor who has competed in eight America's Cups. He competed with New Zealand Challenge in the 1987, 1988 and 1992 America's Cup campaigns. Fleury was a trimmer with Team New Zealand during their successful 1995 America's Cup campaign and 2000 America's Cup defence. Fleury joined Alinghi and was part of their 2003 America's Cup victory, 2007 America's Cup defence and 2010 America's Cup loss. In 2010 he was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame. Don Cowie (sailor)
Don Cowie, born 5 January 1962 in Palmerston North, New Zealand, is a former competitive sailor who won a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Cowie teamed with ex-American Rod Davis in the Star class to finish second to the American crew. He again sailed with Davis as part of the New Zealand Challenge at the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup. Cowie and Davis finished fifth at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and were also fifth in the Soling class at Sydney along with 3rd crewman Alan Smith. Cowie was the yachting section team leader for New Zealand at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. In international keelboat racing Cowie has been in winning teams in the Kenwood Cup (for Japan). Robert Salthouse (born 5 December 1965) is a New Zealand sailor who has sailed in multiple Volvo Ocean Races and America's Cups. Salthouse joined New Zealand Challenge and sailed in the 1987 Louis Vuitton Cup and on '' KZ 1'' during the 1988 America's Cup. He sailed with the team again in the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup. Jeremy Scantlebury is a New Zealand sailor who has competed in multiple America's Cups. Scantlebury sailed with Digby Taylor on ''NZI Enterprise'' during the 1985–86 Whitbread Round the World Race. He raced with New Zealand Challenge on ''KZ 7'' in the 1987 Louis Vuitton Cup and sailed in the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup. Bruce Farr
Bruce Kenneth Farr (born 1949 in Auckland) is a New Zealand designer of racing and cruising yachts. Farrdesigned boats have won, challenged for, or placed highly in the Whitbread Round the World Race, America's Cup, and Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, among others. Farr's services to yacht design were recognised in the 1990 Queen's Birthday Honours, when he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. He currently lives near Annapolis, Maryland, USA. Early boats Farr began building boats at the age of 13 near Warkworth north of Auckland. His first boats were plywood hard chine Moth class designs. Tom Schnackenberg
Thomas William Schnackenberg (born 11 May 1945) is a New Zealand sailor and yacht designer best known for his involvement with the America's Cup. He was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 2000. Schnackenberg attended Auckland Grammar School before gaining a masters in physics from the University of Auckland and enrolling for a Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia. Having served in the Auckland Grammar School Sea Cadets, Schnackenberg joined the RNZNVR, later acquiring a commission as a Reserve officer at HMNZS Ngapona. Schnackenberg joined North Sails in 1974, and was first involved with the 1977 America's Cup as a sailmaker for US-27 "Enterprise", skippered by Lowell North. He returned to NZ in 1978 to start a branch of North Sails there. Peter Lester
Peter Lester (born in Christchurch) is a New Zealand sailor and broadcaster. Sailing career In 1977 he was the World Champion in the OK class. He was named the NZ Yachtsman of the Year in 1977 and again in 1987. Lester joined New Zealand Challenge for the 1988 America's Cup where he was the tactician on board '' KZ1''. He coached the Spanish Desafio España Copa America challenge at the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup. In 1993 he was the helmsman on Willi Illbruck's '' Pinta'', which won the One Ton Cup. David Barnes (sailor)
David John Barnes (27 April 1958 – 23 October 2020) was a New Zealand America's Cup sailor, and three-time 470 world champion. Early years Born in Wellington, Barnes was educated at Tawa College. He married Karen in 1986, and the couple had three children. Sailing career Barnes skippered the KZ1 yacht which lost to the United States in the 1988 America's Cup race. Later years Barnes was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. In 2013 he became involved with ''Kiwi Gold Sailing'', a group of paralympians attempting to qualify a Sonar for the 2016 Paralympics. The team included fellow America's Cup veteran Rick Dodson. However, Barnes' condition worsened and he withdrew from the team in 2014. Barnes died on 23 October 2020, aged 62.
