1979 NASL Budweiser Indoor Soccer Invitational
The 1979 NASL Budweiser Indoor Soccer Invitational was a four-team indoor soccer tournament held at the Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg, Florida on the final weekend of January 1979. Overview Four teams North American Soccer League teams participated in the two-day event; the Dallas Tornado, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, the Tampa Bay Rowdies, and the Tulsa Roughnecks. Matches were 45 minutes long and divided into three 15-minute periods with an intermission between each. Each session consisted of two games ''(i.e. a doubleheader)''. Nearly 12,700 people attended the two sessions. Dallas and Tampa Bay each won both of their matches, but Dallas Tornado were crowned champions based on a greater goal differential. Dallas forward Jim Ryan lead the invitational in scoring with 7 goals. George Ley
Oliver Albert George Ley (born 7 April 1946) is an English former footballer who played professionally in both England and the United States. Ley played for Exeter City, Portsmouth, Brighton & Hove Albion and Gillingham between 1963 and 1976. Following his English career, Ley moved to the Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League. He was twice named to the NASL All Star second team as a defender. He then moved to the Major Indoor Soccer League and played for the Wichita Wings. Alieu "Al" Njie is a retired American soccer forward who played professionally in the North American Soccer League, American Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League. Njie attended Florida International University, playing on the men's soccer team in 1977 and 1978. Farrukh Quraishi
Farrukh Quraishi ( fa, فرخ قریشی, born November 13, 1951, in Masjid-I-Sulaiman, Iran) is a retired Iranian-born English footballer. He spent six seasons in the North American Soccer League playing for the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Calgary Boomers. Since retiring from playing, he has held numerous executive positions in U.S. soccer teams and organizations. Quraishi won the 1974 Hermann Trophy. Most recently he was the President and General Manager of the modern Tampa Bay Rowdies. Playing career Youth Quraishi was born in Iran, but grew up in Slough, near London, England. Steve Wegerle
Steve Wegerle (born 15 May 1953) is a former professional soccer player who played as a winger. Wegerle was born in Pretoria. He was voted Player of the Year is South Africa in 1974. He then joined Coventry City in 1975, but made no first team appearances. Steve Wegerle played 5 times for Feyenoord Rotterdam in 1975–76, finishing 2nd with Feyenoord in the Dutch competition, with 88 goals for and 40 goals against. His brother Geoffrey also played for Feyenoord Rotterdam in that 1975/1976 season. After June 1976, Steve Wegerle starred for the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League for five seasons from 1977 to 1981. Tommy Maurer (born January 7, 1960) is a former North American Soccer League midfielder. Career Youth In 1970 his family moved to U.S. from West Germany, but with no local youth soccer leagues available Maurer started his own while in the 5th grade. He was a high school All-American, and the top high school player in Pennsylvania while at Pennsbury High School in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania. Sebastião Miranda da Silva Filho, usually called Mirandinha, (born 26 February 1952) is a Brazilian former footballer who played as a forward. At international level, he was included in the Brazilian squad for the 1974 FIFA World Cup. Club career Mirandinha spent his early career in Brazil. In 1978, São Paulo sent him to the Tampa Bay Rowdies midway through the North American Soccer League season. That season, the Rowdies went to the championship where they fell to the New York Cosmos. Mirandinha scored the lone Rowdies goal in the 3–1 Soccer Bowl '78 loss. He also co-led the team in goals for the Rowdies' brief winter indoor campaign of 1979, scoring five times in five matches. Rodney Marsh (footballer)
Rodney William Marsh (born 11 October 1944) is an English former footballer and football coach; he later worked as a broadcaster. A forward, he won nine caps for England between 1971 and 1973, scoring one international goal. Brought up in the East End of London, he played youth football for West Ham United before he made his professional debut with Fulham in March 1963. He scored 22 goals in 63 First Division games before falling out with the management and taking a £15,000 transfer to Queens Park Rangers in March 1966. He helped the club to the 1967 League Cup and to consecutive promotions through the Third Division and Second Division. In March 1972 he was sold to Manchester City for £200,000. Stephen John Earle (born 1 November 1945) is an English former footballer who played professionally in both England and the United States. Player An industrious midfielder, Earle played over ten years (1963–1974) for Fulham F.C. He then moved to Leicester City, playing from 1974 to 1978. During his time with Leicester City, Earle also played one game on loan with Peterborough United. In 1978, Earle moved to the Detroit Express of North American Soccer League. Iraj Danaeifard ( fa, ايرج دانايی فرد, 11 March 1951 – 12 December 2018) was an Iranian football player who played most of his career for Taj (currently Esteghlal) and also the Iran national football team. Club career Danaeifard became involved in football at a young age. His father, Ali Danaeifard was one of the founders of Taj SC football club.
