1977 Intercontinental Cup
The 1977 Intercontinental Cup was an association football tie held over two legs in March and August 1978 between Boca Juniors, winners of the 1977 Copa Libertadores, and Borussia Mönchengladbach, runners-up of the 1976–77 European Cup. European Cup winners Liverpool declined to participate. Background As Liverpool declined to participate, Borussia Mönchengladbach was the team appointed to play the series. Due to schedule problems, the Cup was not played until 1978, with the second leg having been held more than four months after the first game in Buenos Aires. Previously to those series, Borussia had won the Bundesliga three consecutive times (1974–77) with notable players such as Berti Vogts and Danish forward Allan Simonsen, awarded with Ballon d'Or in 1977. Allan Simonsen
Allan Rodenkam Simonsen (born 15 December 1952) is a Danish former footballer and manager. He most prominently played as a striker for German Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach, winning the 1975 and 1979 UEFA Cups, as well as for Barcelona in Spain, winning the 1982 Cup Winners' Cup. Simonsen is the only footballer to have scored in the European Cup, UEFA Cup, and Cup Winners' Cup finals. Simonsen was named 1977 European Footballer of the Year. For the Denmark national team, Simonsen was capped 55 times, scoring 20 goals. He represented Denmark at the 1972 Summer Olympics, 1984 European Championship and 1986 World Cup tournaments. Mario Nicasio Zanabria (born 1 October 1948 in Santa Fe) is an Argentine former football player, who played as a midfielder, and the current coach of Real España. Club career A playmaker, Zanabria made his début in the first division in 1967 with Unión de Santa Fe, where he played until 1969. From 1970 to 1975 he excelled with Newell's Old Boys, winning the Metropolitano in 1974. Rubén Suñé
Rubén José Suñé (7 March 1947, Buenos Aires – 20 June 2019) was an Argentine football midfielder who won eight titles with Boca Juniors and also played for the Argentina national team, With the Argentina national team, where he his international debut in 1969 and played a total of six games for the squad. Jorge José Benítez
Jorge José Benítez (born 3 June 1950 in Gobernador Castro, Buenos Aires Province) is an Argentine former football player and coach. Nicknamed ''El Chino'' ("The Chinese"), Benítez started his career in Racing Club in 1969; in 1973 he was transferred to Boca Juniors, where he stayed until retirement in 1983. Francisco Pedro Manuel Sá (born 25 October 1945, in Las Lomitas, Formosa) is a retired Argentine football defender. Sá holds the record for the most Copa Libertadores titles, he won six; 4 consecutive titles with Club Atlético Independiente between 1972 and 1975, and a further 2 with Boca Juniors in 1977 and 1978. Career Sá started his career with Central Goya in the lower leagues, he then had a spell with Huracán de Corrientes before joining River Plate in 1969. Vicente Alberto Pernía (born 25 April 1949 in Tandil, Buenos Aires Province), known as ''El Tano'' (the Italian, in lunfardo), is an Argentine former professional footballer who played as a defender. He then went on to a second career as a car racing driver. Club career ''El Tano'' started his football career with Estudiantes de La Plata in 1969, where he played until his transfer to Boca Juniors in 1973. During his time at Boca Pernía won a number of titles, including 3 league titles and 2 Copa Libertadores. Rainer Bonhof (born 29 March 1952) is a German former professional footballer, who played as a defensive midfielder or wing-back. He was known for his occasional bursts upfield and his fierce shot. Wilfried Hannes
Wilfried Hannes (born 17 May 1957) is a German former professional footballer who played as a defender, and manager, known for achieving his career despite being visually impaired after a pupil-tumour had caused him to lose his sight in his right eye as a child. Jorge Daniel Ribolzi (born 25 January 1953), also known for his nickname "Ruso" is an Argentine former footballer and current coach. His position on the field was midfielder.
