1949 Thomas Cup
The 1949 Thomas Cup was the inaugural tournament of Thomas Cup, the most important men's badminton team competition in the world. The tournament was originally planned for 1941–1942 (badminton seasons in the northern hemisphere traditionally ran from the autumn of one calendar year to the spring of the next), but was delayed when World War II exploded across the continents. Sir George's dream was finally realized in 1948-1949 when ten national teams participated in the first Thomas Cup competition. Three qualifying zones were established: Pan America, Europe, and the Pacific; though Malaya (now Malaysia and Singapore) was the only Pacific zone participant. In a format that would last until 1984, all ties (matches between nations) would consist of nine individual matches; the victorious nation needing to win at least five of these contests. Law Teik Hock (; 4 July 1922 – 13 July 2010) was a Malaysian badminton player from George Town, Penang. Badminton career Law won the first edition of Thomas Cup with the Malayan team in 1949. In the final against Denmark, Law was promoted to first singles after Wong Peng Soon was forced to skip the final due to an injury. In his first singles, he defeated Jørn Skaarup 15-5, 15-0 but lost 15-11, 15-1 to Mogen Felsby in the reverse singles. In 1948, Law partnered Eddy Choong to a historic victory at the Penang Open. In the finals of the tournament, they defeated Ooi Teik Hock and Tan Kin Hong with the score line of 15-8 and 15-11, which was the first defeat for Ooi and Tan for over seven years. Teoh Seng Khoon (; 8 November 1918 – 31 July 2018) was a Malaysian badminton player who represented his country in team and individual competition between 1940s to 1950s. Career Teoh played on the 1949 Malayan Thomas Cup (men's international) team and won the world title. Paired with Ooi Teik Hock Ooi Teik Hock (; born 13 November 1920 – 21 March 1983) was a male badminton player from Malaysia who won Malayan national titles and represented his country in team and individual competition between 1939 and 1958.
