Balestier
Balestier () is a sub zone located in the planning area of Novena in the Central Region of Singapore. The main road, Balestier Road, links Thomson Road to Serangoon Road and the road continues on as Lavender Street. The area is home to rows of shophouses, such as the Sim Kwong Ho shophouses, the Balestier Art Deco shophouses, 412-418 Balestier Road, and 601-639 Balestier Road, low-rise apartments and commercial buildings as well as a shopping mall known as Shaw Plaza. However, Shaw Plaza has since closed down and is under construction. Balestier also has another mall, Zhongshan Mall. There are several lighting and electrical shops along Balestier Road, which is also home to the Ceylon Sports Club and the Indian Association. The area is known for its food such as bak kut teh and chicken rice. In the area, there are several apartments, condominiums, and budget hotels. Wong Peng Soon
Wong Peng Soon, (; 17 February 1917 – 22 May 1996) was a Malayan/Singaporean badminton player who reigned as a top player in Malaya from the 1930s to the 1950s when it was a single nation. Noted for his smooth but powerful strokes and graceful footwork, he won the singles title seven times in Singapore and eight times in Malaya during this period, as well as being the top player in the All England, the Danish Open, the Indian and Philippines championships to name a few. Acknowledged as one of the greatest badminton players of all time, he won the All England singles title four times in only five attempts and dominated the Thomas Cup in the late 1940s to the mid 1950s as a member of the Malayan teams. Singapore Open (badminton)
The Singapore Open is a badminton event that has been held in Singapore annually since 1929. Badminton World Federation categorized Singapore Open as one of the seven BWF World Tour Super 500 events in the BWF events structure since 2018. In 2023, the tournament will be upgraded to a Super 750 event. In 1929, the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) was established to promote the sport and organise competitions. Its first official annual open championships was held in that same year with the best players chosen to represent Singapore in the regional tournaments. In 1957, it became an open invitation championships and was held annually until 1973. In 1987–1989, the tournament was known as the Konica Cup, an invitation championships exclusively for Asian players, and in 1990, for the first time entered the International Badminton Federation Grand Prix circuit. Alice Pennefather
Alice Edith Wilhelmina Pennefather (née Patterson; 1903 – 1983) was a Singaporean sportwoman who excelled in various sports such as badminton, field hockey, netball, and tennis. In 2016, she was inducted into the Singapore Women's Hall of Fame, maintained by the Singapore Council of Women's Organisations. Early life Alice Patterson was born in Singapore on 16 October 1903, and was of Japanese and Scottish descent. She was educated at the Raffles Girls' School and had no particular interest in sports until she met Lancelot Maurice Pennefather, an all-around sportsman in 1918. Tan Chong Tee
Tan Chong Tee (; 15 October 1916 – 24 November 2012) was a Chinese resistance fighter based in Singapore and British Malaya, Malaya during World War II. An accomplished badminton player before the war, he joined Force 136 around 1942 after Battle of Singapore, Singapore fell to the Japanese. In 1944, while on a mission, Tan, along with Lim Bo Seng and other Force 136 members, was captured by the Japanese. He was subjected to torture during his captivity. After the war, he returned to playing badminton and later became a businessman. Early life Tan was born in an ethnic Chinese family with ancestry from Fujian, Fujian Province at his family residence along Shrewsbury Road in present-day Novena, Singapore. His father, Tan Kah Tek, worked in a carriage shop on Orchard Road while his mother, Lim Peng Tuan, owned a floral nursery.
