1936 Illinois Gubernatorial Election
Elections were held in Illinois on Tuesday, November 3, 1936. Primaries were held April 14, 1936. The elections overall saw a strong performance by the Democratic Party. Democrats retained their control of both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly and all statewide executive offices, winning all the statewide executive offices by broad margins. Democrats swept the election for University of Illinois trustees. Democrats also carried the state in the presidential election. Democratic United States senator J. Hamilton Lewis was reelected. Herman Bundesen
Herman Niels Bundesen (April 27, 1882August 25, 1960) was a German-American medical professional, politician, and author. He served two tenures as the chief health official of the city of Chicago, Illinois (cumulatively holding this role for more than 34 years). He also was elected Cook County coroner. In 1936, he ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic Party nomination for governor of Illinois. Respected in his field, Bundesen was also known for his flamboyance. He was seen to desire celebrity, taking many opportunities for media photo ops. The Progressive Party was a third party in the United States formed in 1912 by former president Theodore Roosevelt after he lost the presidential nomination of the Republican Party to his former protégé rival, incumbent president William Howard Taft. The new party was known for taking advanced positions on progressive reforms and attracting leading national reformers. The party was also ideologically deeply connected with America's indigenous radical-liberal tradition. After the party's defeat in the 1912 presidential election, it went into rapid decline in elections until 1918, disappearing by 1920. In the Chicago mayoral election of 1935, incumbent Interim Mayor Edward J. Kelly (who had been appointed to office of mayor after the assassination of Anton Cermak) defeated Republican Emil C. Wetten and independent candidate Newton Jenkins by a landslide 60% margin of victory. Both major parties held primary elections to select their nominees.
