1909 VFL Grand Final
The 1909 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Carlton Football Club and South Melbourne Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 2 October 1909. It was the 12th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1909 VFL season. The match, attended by 37,759 spectators, was won by South Melbourne by two points, marking that club's first premiership victory. The Season Carlton and South Melbourne finished in the top two during the minor round of the 1909 season, each finishing with a 14–4 record. South Melbourne was the minor premier, with a higher percentage than Carlton. George Bruce (footballer)
George Bruce (5 August 1879 – 5 June 1928) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1900s. Family The son of George Bruce and Annie Bruce, he was born on 5 August 1879. Bruce's older brothers, Jim and Percy, also played for West Adelaide. Married to Grace Bennett Bruce (1881-1945), née Murie, he had three children, Grace, George and Donald. He died on 5 June 1928. Football Bruce was a wingman and was cleared to Carlton from South Australian Football League club West Adelaide in 1903. George Alan Campbell Pentland (3 October 1883 – 15 December 1952) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of William Christie Pentland (1844-1931), and Euphemia Craig Pentland (1848-1924), née Morison, George Alan Campbell Pentland was born on 3 October 1883. He married Queenie Australia Osborn (1888-1955) on 23 August 1913. Harvey Kelly
Harvey "Duff" Kelly (24 March 1883 – 30 July 1944) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne and Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Western Australian Harvey Kelly played most of his games at centre half forward and was noted for his long, accurate drop and place kicks. He started out at South Melbourne in 1902 but after just one season returned home and joined East Fremantle. A member of East's 1904 premiership team, he crossed to rivals South Fremantle in 1905. His brothers Ernie and Otto, who both had VFL careers, played beside him at South Fremantle. While in Western Australia, Kelly played two first-class cricket matches for the state, as a bowler. Martin Gotz
Martin Gustav Gotz (26 February 1883 – 13 August 1967) was an Australian rules footballer in the early 20th century who most notably played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Gotz started his senior career at Port Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) in 1902 before heading to Western Australia the following year to play for Perth Football Club.
