17th Knesset
The following is a list of the members of the seventeenth Knesset, 2006 Israeli legislative election, elected on 28 March 2006 and inaugurated 4 May 2006, and their replacements. Knesset members 1 This title, in Hebrew ממלא מקום ראש הממשלה (''Memale Mekom Rosh HaMemshala'', lit. Prime Minister's Place Filler), means Livni was first in line to replace the Prime Minister in case of incapacitation or death; it does not mean she actually exercised any Prime Ministerial duties. ² Labour successfully filed a lawsuit, alleging electoral fraud in several Arab settlements and requesting an additional seat at the expense of the United Arab List. Zakour was replaced by Labour's Shakib Shanan. 3 Gil parliamentary group split in April 2008, with MKs Sharoni, Marom and Glazer forming the Justice for the Elderly faction. Knesset
The Knesset ( he, הַכְּנֶסֶת ; "gathering" or "assembly") is the unicameral legislature of Israel. As the supreme state body, the Knesset is sovereign and thus has complete control of the entirety of the Israeli government (with the exception of checks and balances from the courts and local governments). The Knesset passes all laws, elects the president and prime minister (although the latter is ceremonially appointed by the President), approves the cabinet, and supervises the work of the government, among other things. In addition, the Knesset elects the state comptroller. It also has the power to waive the immunity of its members, remove the president and the state comptroller from office, dissolve the government in a constructive vote of no confidence, and to dissolve itself and call new elections. Gideon Ezra
Gideon Ezra ( he, גדעון עזרא, 30 June 1937 – 17 May 2012) was an Israeli politician. He served as a member of the Knesset for Likud and Kadima between 1996 and 2012, and also held several ministerial portfolios. Biography Ezra's family came originally as immigrants from Iraq and settled in Palestine. He was born in Jerusalem and served in the Israeli Defense Force between 1955 and 1958 in the Nahal. He studied geography and political science at the University of Haifa. He worked for the Shin Bet from 1962 to 1995. After leaving the service, he served as an advisor to then Minister of Internal Security, Moshe Shahal. Political career Ezra was elected to the Knesset in the 1996 elections on the Likud list, and retained his seat in the 1999 and 2003 elections. David Tal (Israeli Politician)
David Tal ( he, דוד טל) (born 26 January 1950) is an Israeli politician and a former member of the Knesset. He was a member of the Kadima faction. Biography Born in Tunisia and raised in Rehovot, Tal studied at an ORT high school in that city. He served as a First Sergeant during his national service in the IDF and afterwards worked as a mechanic. He speaks English, Arabic and Tunisian. He lives in Rishon LeZion with his wife. He has six children. Political career He joined the Sephardi Haredi party Shas, and began his political career as a member of the Rishon LeZion municipal council. In 1996 he was elected to the Knesset on the Shas list and became a Deputy Speaker of the Knesset. Eli Aflalo
Eli Aflalo ( he, אלי אפללו, born 8 September 1952) is an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Kadima and Likud from 2003 until 2012. Between July 2008 and March 2009 he was the country's Minister of Immigrant Absorption. Biography Aflalo was born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1952 and made aliyah to Israel in 1962. He completed his army service with the rank of staff sergeant. He was first elected to the Knesset on the Likud list in 2003, and on 30 March 2005 was appointed as Deputy Minister of Industry, Trade, and Labour. Menachem Ben-Sasson
Menahem Ben-Sasson ( he, מנחם בן-ששון, born 7 July 1951) is an Israeli politician and a former member of the Knesset for Kadima. Between 2009 and 2017 he was the president of Hebrew University of Jerusalem, succeeding Menachem Magidor. Biography Born in Jerusalem, Israel, Ben-Sasson served in a Nahal unit in Ein Tzurim and in the artillery section during his national service in the Israel Defense Forces. He went on to study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he gained a BA in History and philosophy and a PhD in the History of the Jewish People in the Islamic Lands. Ben-Sasson lives in Jerusalem, and is married with three children. In addition to Hebrew, he speaks Arabic, English, French, and German. Minister Without Portfolio
A minister without portfolio is either a government minister with no specific responsibilities or a minister who does not head a particular ministry. The sinecure is particularly common in countries ruled by coalition governments and a cabinet with decision-making authority wherein a minister without portfolio, while they may not head any particular office or ministry, may still receive a ministerial salary and has the right to cast a vote in cabinet decisions. Ze'ev Boim ( he, זאב בוים, 30 April 1943 – 18 March 2011) was an Israeli politician. He was the mayor of Kiryat Gat before becoming a Knesset member for Likud and later Kadima. List Of Knesset Speakers
The Speaker of the Knesset ( he, יוֹשֵׁב רֹאשׁ הכנסת, Yoshev Rosh HaKnesset, Chairman of the Knesset) is the presiding officer of the Knesset, the unicameral legislature of Israel. The Speaker also acts as President of Israel when the President is incapacitated. The current speaker is Yariv Levin, who was elected on 13 December 2022. To date, Ahdut HaAvoda's Nahum Nir and Blue & White's Benny Gantz are the only Speakers not to have come from the ruling party, though in two cases ( Avraham Burg and Reuven Rivlin) the party of the speaker (One Israel and Likud respectively) lost power during their term.
