The 1997 National League Championship Series (NLCS) was a semifinal series in Major League Baseball’s 1997 postseason that pitted the Florida Marlins against the Atlanta Braves. The Marlins won the series, 4–2, and went on to defeat the Cleveland Indians in the 1997 World Series. Background Both teams hailed from the NL East division, the 101-win Braves being the division champions while the Marlins made the playoffs courtesy of the wild card. Both the Braves and Marlins swept their opponents during the Division Series. The 1997 Florida Marlins season was the fifth season for the Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise in the National League. Charlie Williams (umpire)
Charles Herman Williams (December 20, 1943 – September 10, 2005) was an American umpire (baseball), baseball umpire who officiated in the National League (baseball), National League from 1978 in baseball, 1978 to 1999 in baseball, 1999, and in both leagues from 2000 to 2001. He was the fourth African American to serve as a full-time MLB umpire, and in 1985 became the first Black umpire of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The National League East is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. Along with the American League Central, it is one of two divisions to have every member win at least one World Series title. After having internal, informal divisions for scheduling purposes during the pre-expansion era, the division was formally created when the National League (baseball), National League (NL) (along with the American League) added two expansion teams and divided into two divisions, East and West effective for the 1969 season. Frank Pulli
Frank Victor Pulli (March 22, 1935 – August 28, 2013) was a professional baseball umpire, working in the National League from 1972 until 1999. He umpired many postseason games, including four World Series. Pulli wore uniform number 14 during his career.
