1991 WLAF Season
The 1991 WLAF season was the inaugural season of the World League of American Football and was the first transatlantic sports league. The regular season began on March 23, and concluded on May 27. The postseason ran from June 1 until June 9, when the London Monarchs defeated the Barcelona Dragons 21–0 in World Bowl '91 at Wembley Stadium in London, England. World Bowl '91
World Bowl '91 (also referred to as World Bowl I) was the first annual World Bowl, the championship game of the World League of American Football. It took place on June 9, 1991 at London's Wembley Stadium. The game featured a matchup between the Barcelona Dragons and the London Monarchs. The Monarchs won 21–0 in front of 61,108 fans. Background The teams finished the 1991 season with the two best records in the WLAF. The Monarchs' 9–1 mark qualified them for the playoffs as European division champions, while the Dragons finished 8–2 and qualified as a wildcard. 1991 Barcelona Dragons Season
The 1991 Barcelona Dragons season was the inaugural season for the franchise in the newly created World League of American Football (WLAF). The team was led by head coach Jack Bicknell, and played its home games at Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The three European teams had dominated the North American ones, and in week 9, Barcelona had lost to Frankfurt Galaxy, which had both teams tied at 7-2 for the wild card spot, with Frankfurt having the tie breaker advantage, and Barcelona still having to face the unbeaten London Monarchs. Galaxy lost their last game, though, which gave Barcelona the chance to win the wildcard by beating the Monarchs in Wembley. Which they did, to the surprise of Frankfurt, less so to the surprise of London. Guard (American Football)
In American football, a guard (G), otherwise known as an offensive guard (OG), is an Lineman (gridiron football), offensive line player who lines up between the center (American football), center and the offensive tackle, tackles. Like other offensive line positions, guards are used primarily for Blocking (American football), blocking. Right guards (RG) is the term for the guards on the right of the offensive line, while left guards (LG) are on the left side. Scott Alexander Adams (September 28, 1966 – September 16, 2013) was an American professional football player who played guard for a six-season career, in-which he played for the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Atlanta Falcons. Mike Withycombe
William Michael Withycombe (born November 18, 1964) is an American former professional football offensive lineman who played three seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL), mainly for the Baltimore Stallions. Previously he played four seasons in the National Football League (NFL) for three different teams after being selected by the New York Jets in the fifth round of the 1988 NFL draft. Steve Gabbard
Stephen Edward Gabbard (born July 19, 1966) is a former offensive tackle in the National Football League. Career 1988 Second Team All-South Independent in college, Gabbard was originally signed to the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent offensive tackle and participated in two playoff games. He spent two seasons as a member of the practice squad and suffered a knee injury. After surgery, he was sent to the World Football League to rehabilitate, where he was the first draft selection to the London Monarchs. Carl Wayne Parker (born February 5, 1965) is an American former professional football wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL), Canadian Football League (CFL), World League of American Football (WLAF), and Arena Football League (AFL) for the Cincinnati Bengals, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Sacramento Surge, Sacramento Gold Miners, and the Albany Firebirds. Dana Brinson (born April 10, 1965) is an American former professional football player who was a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL).
