1983 Copa América
The 1983 Copa América football tournament was played between 10 August and 4 November, with all ten CONMEBOL members participating. Defending champions Paraguay received a bye into the semi-finals. The cup was won by Uruguay, that beat Brazil in the final match. This achievement ended Uruguay's 16-year streak without an official championship since the 1967 South American Championship, and qualified the ''Celestes'' to play the first Artemio Franchi Trophy in 1985 against France, winner of the UEFA Euro 1984. Each team played twice (home and away) against the other teams in their group, with two points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. Carlos Aguilera (Uruguayan Footballer)
Carlos Alberto Aguilera Nova (born 21 September 1964) is a Uruguayan former professional footballer who played as a forward. He represented Uruguay at an international level, earning a total of 64 caps. Club career Aguilera began his career playing for River Plate Montevideo, from 1980 to 1982. From 1983 to 1985 he played in Club Nacional de Football, then passed to Independiente Medellín (1985), returned to Nacional (1986), Racing Club of Argentina (1986), again in Nacional (1987), and Tecos of Mexico (1987–88). In 1988, he went to Europe to play for Italian clubs Genoa C.F.C. (1989–92), and then A.C. Torino (1992–94). He returned to C.A. Peñarol in 1994, where he played until 1999, finishing a brilliant career. Whilst at Genoa he memorably scored two goals at Anfield to knock Liverpool out of the 1991–92 UEFA Cup. A single-elimination knockout, or sudden-death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of a match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Arnaldo Cézar Coelho
Arnaldo David Cézar Coelho (born 15 January 1943) is a former football referee. He was the first Brazilian, indeed the first non-European, to take charge of the FIFA World Cup final when he officiated in the 1982 final between Italy and West Germany. Coelho's career began as a beach soccer referee; he became professional in 1965 (at one time, famously, telling reporters that he was the highest paid match official in the world) and was appointed to the international list in 1968.
